My maternal grandmother had 5 miscarriages, migraines, some neurological symptoms and past of deep vein thrombosis. Her medical records are at a VA hosp, and I have been wondering if it is worth looking into getting them. By all accounts I believe Hughes syndrome was the culprit. At the time of her death, the doctor told the family that all family members needed to be tested for her disease, as it was hereditary. Her sons and daughters and grandchildren all have the migraines. my aunt is believed to have lupus, my mother and other 2 aunts are presenting neurological symptoms suggestive of hughes. then there is me. so, I am wondering if hughes is hereditary. the migraines etc, go back 4 generations < that we know adn are able to track>.
thanks for any input! http://www.thelupussite.com/public_html/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/flower2.gif

Not strictly hereditary in that there is a definite chance of any one child having it, like 1:4 but there is a strong familial tendency.
It has only been identified in the past 15 years or so . Many people who have it now suspect that relatives in previous generations did too, judging from the sorts of illness or health issues they had . I doubt if there is any point getting medica records family history should be enough.
One thing that can indicate undiagnosed lupu/APS is somebody getting a false positive syphilis test when they were having a medical for the armed forces or for a marriage licence or pre natal checks - it might be hard to find out about that except from records ! Not something people talk readily about.
You certainly should be tested for it anyway - it should form part of any thorough lupus work up Good luck

Hi bravelegs
Hughes Syndrome is not hereditary - but it is often found in more than one family member like lupus and migraines are!
If you have any of the symptoms of Hughes Syndrome then you should certainly have the blood tests done and do remember that negative blood results does not rule out the diagnosis.
Take care.
