This is long and you may want to print it out.
I noticed I see many comments about hair loss so hear is a free consultation. Hope it helps someone.
When I worked as a hair stylist I would often have to calm my clients down at this particular change of season. We forget we are animals on this planet and therefore do shed the most hair during this particular season change. (September and October sometimes as late as November,in the south) You need to give yourself plenty room for natural hair loss. Don't panic.
Our bodies act as if it is time to grow the "winter fur".... sorry about that analogy but it is the best one I can find for the what and why of it.
Brush your hair over the bath tub or sink and get rid of the lost hair right away. Get it out of your brush also. The object is to get your mind off of the extra loss that is going on. I find that if you walk in the bath room and see any in the drain or on the floor, it only feeds the anxiety.
By December you will notice new growth.
I also take medication that creates extra hair loss, so I know where you guys are coming from.
Changing your shampoo and getting a bit stiffer hair gel will give you a temporary respite from limp hair. After a few weeks go back to your normal hair products.
I did a lot of chemical work in the Salon and learned a lot about this seasonal phenomena.
These few little rules will help a lot ....
1- Wash your hair as if you are washing your best silk blouse.
2- Before you wash gently brush out the hair. Never wash tangled hair. I know the shampoo girl does it, but it is dead wrong if you care about your hair or hair loss.
3- Don't comb or brush your hair when you first get out the shower. Your hair follicles will release the hair easier. That is why it is easier and less painful to tweeze your eyebrows after shower or applying any for of heat.
4- If you have hair that is dry due to chemicals (hair color, perm, frosting), put one teaspoon of your favorite thick conditioner in a spray bottle with water and spray your hair, mostly on ends. Maybe if you are going sit and read or watch TV and don't need your hair to be totally dry. If your hair is damaged on the ends you won't even notice the conditioner after it is dry
5 - Never dry your hair 100%, even before you put hot rollers in hair. The older we get the more important that is. In the salon, I dried it 80% with blow dryer and put dryer on cool to dry the rest of the way. But if you don't have to go to the 100% dry, don't do it.
I promise you, if you follow these suggestions, you will see more and thicker hair by Christmas.
Oh yes....#6 is very important.
6- When drying hair - gently blot it dry, don't rub it dry.
Remember - take care of your hair the same way you care for that silk blouse.
(The same is for guys, except skip my silk blouse analogy.)
Let your hair cool down allowing all the pours on the scalp to close before you comb or brush your hair. If possible, buy a wide tooth Denman Brush. They have brushes that have teeth wide apart, and since the teeth are soft and bend easy, it doesn't break the hair like a normal brush.
I think Denman has a site for you to pop over to and see what I mean. I used to buy the brushes for my clients. Before I fell down the stairs and hurt my back, I made good money teaching my clients how to keep their hair healthy.
Some say rinsing with cold water is good but I find letting your hair cool naturally works much better and leaves it easier to manage.
Hope this helps. Hair care is important when you are taking meds and there is plenty of stuff you can do till the new growth gets here. Expect new growth !
Be extra kind to your hair especially this time of year.
