View Full Version : Canker sores

I recently came down with the flu. I was out of commission for a few days, but I thought I got through it rather well. The worst part is that I developed 6 huge canker sores in my mouth and on my lips. I hadn't had a single canker sore in my life until I was diagnosed with lupus. Now every time I feel run down they're everywhere. Does anyone else have this?
Thanks,
~Summer

Dear Summer,

Yes they are very common and can be a real pain I know...I have been using a product that I got from my dentist called Orabase..its a type of liquid bandage which will help you when yoru eating...it really doesnt last very long in your mouth but definately long enough to eat...wonderful product...You should inform your doctor of this problem because it is a good indication that you are about to or are flaring.

Good Luck!

I get them smack bang in the middle of the tongue, but only when lungs are real bad. Yes they are a indication you are flaring again.

Another good product for cankor sores, have heard people swear by this stuff, available on prescription in the US from doctor or dentist.

Hi there

Can someone please tell me what canker sores are?

It is not something I am familiar with - and not something we hear of in the UK!

Are they the same as herpes simplex sores - also known as cold sores?

Love
Sannie

Hi,
Yes I don`t know what canker sores are either, but I used to get horrid cold sores, but now I have to be specially careful, don`t wear lip stick only use one cup...because if my guard is down then they come back with a vengance. Is this what they are.

much love & thoughts

Sannie cankor sores are a lot larger than a ulcer, they look like they have a great crater in the middle. Common to get them on the tongue. Mine look ghastly as usually also I have a white tongue and this 'thing' in the middle of the tongue and in my case you could swear it is infected too and they are PAINFUL...ouch.

I'm still confused on the mouth ulcer/canker sore debate with this stuff  Really confused.
The things we call cold sores (herpes simplex) I'm familiar with and used to get them on my mouth. But EXACTLY what defines a lupus mouth ulcer?
I have a small crater (for want of a better description!) on the roof of my mouth that's been there for.... oh.... around 18 months, my specialist hasn't seen it and didn't specifically look for it. I have also been flaring for a couple of weeks and I have two red/raised ulcer thingies on the inside of my cheeks, one is surrounded by additional blotchy redness? None of these particularly hurt that much, but maybe that's because the rest of me does hurt so much LOL!
Can someone help clarify this issue, because that is one criteria that he hasn't definitely added, but I don't want to get that pathetic look from him saying, no that's not an ulcer if I show him. He already did that when I showed him the white streaky patch near where my tonsils were, it has a yellow/white dot in it and varies in intensity. He has not volunteered what it is (I must ask him I guess) along with the zillion other things I try and cram into a 15 min. visit

I thought that the cold sores (herpes) were the nasty ones people get around their lips.

Canker sores in N.A. are little painful sores inside the mouth....I always thought. You can buy nice stuff called "Canka" or something to numb them as they really sting. Can start after you accidently bite yourself. They don't last very long....unless they are actually a mouth ulcer...???

Lily, the crater on the roof of your mouth (and cheeks) certainly sounds like a mouth ulcer. I don't often get them (have had a couple of wicked nose ulcers), but when I do, they are on the bony part under my tongue, and start as a little white crater that grows. And smarts a bit. But they are not horrendously painful. Definately show them to your specialist!

Thanks Pandora.
I do get disgusting nasal sores that sometimes get infected, bleed etc. and they've been consistent, coming off and on for years. But the crater thing was new (or at least that's the first time I noticed it among my other symptoms). It did surface around 18 months ago and doesn't particularly smart. I know some people in the general population get a form of mouth ulcers that sting etc, but mine doesn't.
When I've heard you all discuss these though they hang around for quite a while. The one on the roof of my mouth has, but the others come and go according to flare ups, sometimes they are there for a few days, few weeks?
It's all so confusing to me. But you're right, I need to show him. I am just wary of 'the look'. Guess that comes from too many of those looks over the years, this guy in comparison has been very good though generally.
With the streaky thing I showed my GP once and he shone the light and reckoned he couldn't see it  der..........I came home and showed my husband and he was flabbergasted........he said what is he blind or something! I got very upset over it at the time, thought I was going mad or something........well that's on the cards, it's enough to drive you mad!
I think my GP didn't have a clue what it was, so chose NOT to see it. At least the specialist saw it, even if he didn't tell me what it was.
Just sign me, wanting to strangle them all..........where's Caro's pointy stick!

Hi Lily

Yes, I know the dreaded "look". Usually from my GP who seems to be a bit skeptical about the existence of lupus in general.

Caro could make a mint if she licensed those pointy sticks!

Lily the roof of the mouth is definitely Lupus ulcers, have you tried taking folic acid. A number of people have considerable success with folic acid. If you had yours (and as if you would want) biopsied, it would come back as a Lupus ulcer in the result.
Nasal sores can be a real pain for me too, got one on the edge of the outside of the nose (that hayfever attack last week LOL), but I have had large ones inside the nose that have lasted for months, and hugely scabbed.
Thank God the vaginal sores do not scab LOL, they are murder too.

I had a HUGE nasal sore pop up about 2 weeks before the canker sores showed up. They're so painful. All of these wonderful little things are starting to clear up, and I go see my Rheumy next week. I've never had one when I go to see him, and everytime I mention them, he just tells me to "Put some cream on them". The jerk LOVES to blow me off. It's so comforting. <_<
Thanks for all the replies! :D

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I just did a search on canker sores... wondering how many other people had this problem. I still don't have a definitive diagnosis yet, but for now they are calling it a "mixed connective tissue diease with Lupus-type features... or "possible Lupus."

Right now I have a VERY PAINFUL canker sore under my tongue. It is killing me. My whole jaw hurts. It feels like it's infected or something. It's a pretty deep, but small ulcer. I can't eat or talk without experiencing a lot of pain. I wonder if I am about to have a flare up?

Hi, I get canker sores too!! My doc and pharmacist told me that the azathioprine I take can cause mouth sores which it does and also stress causes them or eating things like sunflowers seeds for long periods of time cause them. I got a prescription called Benzydamine rinse, kinda freezes the mouth, like orajel does for a tooth ache. Before that, I would rinse with a strong salt solution, makes them heal a bit faster. The salt hurts like a ******** , but like Buckley's: it works!!! Good luck and take care style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif Twas

Hi,

I believe you can get these or something similar when on some of the immunosuppressants. Folic acid can help if its methotrexate you are on. I got them way before I started Imuran and it hasnt increased the amount I get. I get them right before a flare, always have, and probably always will. The time frame varies as to when I will flare, but it usually starts with the mouth/nasal ulcers.

Hi,

I get ulcers in my mouth also and they seem to coincide with periods where I'm sick. They usually last about a month after I get over my illness. They are very painful, large and always in the way when I'm eating or brushing my teeth.

I have a few nose ulcers and they do scab horribly.

I don't have any advice, but I have an identical crater like ulcer under my tongue at the moment. It's been there a couple of weeks and is really painful. Sunday just gone, about a week after the ulcer appeared my joint pains etc really flared up. I also have no full diagnosis yet, they know something's not right with my immune system, but they haven't put a name to it.
