Just to let you know:
Dr Phil is going to do a show on 'Surviving The Worst'
on June 5th, Thursday.
This is quote from his web site, Dr.Phil.com
"Keeping relationships healthy is hard enough. But when someone gets seriously ill, It's an even bigger challenge. Only one person may be infected, but many loved ones can be affected. Find out how to cope during these difficult times."
Check your local listings for time and channel. Didn't say which illnesses they were going to talk about.

Hum Ho Hum
Let's hope he does a better job than in the past when he's talked along the lines of " all in the mind".
The bitter experience of Oprah's treatment of lupus is fresh in many people's memories.
I am already very suspicious when the word "infected" is used instead of "affected"
If they can't even get their English right , what else are they going to come up with.
I won't hold my breath. I hope I am shown to be wrong.

Dear Clare,
I watch 15 minutes of Oprah once every two years...
What did she do with Lupus?
The woman is in perfect health, has more money hat Croseus, and can't keep her weight below 200, so I always find it interesting to see her treatment of health issues. I mean, I am NOT skinny myself, and do not have a problem with fluffiness in people, but if you insist that people can do anything they make up their minds to do and you can't control what you eat( and she herself has said she eats very badly and too much!)-you may want to change shrinks!
On a side note, I do hear that Dr. Phil has lightened up since he started his own show, and I watched 15 minutes of his show on menopause, which was surprisingly pro-female. HE insisted it isn't all in a woman's head, and that it can present real health challenges that most docs blow off because the pts are women! I was shocked! :o
Quien sabe...
Take care and keep me posted! 3forme

Sorry, I got so many people "riled up" I have never heard Oprah or Dr. Phil say anything about Lupus and I watch them as much as I can. I think I even did search on both web sites and nothing came up a while back.

hi, ok, ok i admit it. i like both oprah and dr phil. but if dr phil says anything stupid about lupus sufferers we should all e mail him and let him know exactly how we feel. i get very "ticked off" when healthy people tell me how i should feel, and how to deal with my disease - i guess i am a little "touchy" sensitive about it. thats why i luv all you guys, you know EXACTLY how i feel.
sharpen that stick caro, we may need it. i dont think there is anything as bad as an angry lupie. except maybe a group of angry lupies.
luv helen.

oh yes, Carolyn Myss... we got so mad that many of us bombarded her web site... She has come back doing other things trying to keep a low profile on lupus... saw her somewhere and was not impressed.. justthought how ironic and brave she tried to be.
She'll score no points in my book.
As for Dr. Phil and Oprah.. I love them both. Dr. Phils tells it like it is... I think that is good. And, Oprah is a very good and kind person... what' not to like... and I do mean well towards others...

Hi Starduster
I would think she would be kind enough to look after the sisters, who after all have lupus 4-5 times more than us whites and have it worse too .
I think kindness is as kindness does and put your money where your mouth is.
Ms Myss retracted when the lupus community made such a fuss but I don't think Oprah ever did anything to put right that great wrong.
We so badly need an influential spokesman celebrity. Think what she could do for the lupus cause if she put her mind to it.
Sorry but I think she goes for what catches the public imagination and lupus just isn't "sexy " enough.
I wonder if lupus is going to figure in Dr Phil's "infectious " diseases. I must have a look through the prog guide. What channel is he usually on ?
Wishing you Well dear Starduster

Actually it was in an Oprah show I first heard about lupus - it must be at least 5 years ago, and I remember how I sat there recognizing one symptom after the other. But it was also a bit terrifying because the people in the show was apparently all the worst cases in the States. I remember they interviewed a little boy, and he was crying, saying that he didn't know if he's mother was going to live.

I like Dr. Phil..>Watch him everyday! It will be interesting to see what he has to say about illness in general but I have not gotten the fact that this show will be about Lupus...but instead more about coping with ALL types of illnesses. which may be why they are talking about infected vs affected. I will definately make every effort to watch thursdays show no matter how busy I am.
What I like the most about Dr. Phil is how he "keeps it real" and honestly I think he does.
Mwah!

I hate dr. Phil. His therapy is no therapy. He basically tells people what to do after talking to them for five minutes. He has no idea what background they come from or any other pertinent information. Many factors contribute to people's distress, and dr. Phil does not take the time to address all of them. He is a know-it-all, and he is making a killing off of Americans who think his "therapy" is good.
The same goes for Dr. Laura; who shouldn't be called 'DR.' It is very misleading. Yes, she has a degree, but her degree is not in the psychological field nor any medical field. She misleads people by calling herself a psychologist. No way can someone deem themself a psychologist without the degree, license, etc.
Back to Oprah; I do not mind her much. I even watch her shows occassionally, but I can sense insincerity on some shows.

Richu ,I totally agree with your comments about Dr Phil. very pertinent to treatment by some of the popular media of health issues (and maybe all topics ! )
There is literally a " programme", a script to be followed, and it has to fit in to a certain time with suitable ad breaks. It has to be sensational.
It has to have drama and is part of the whole reality show trend, where people are victims and spectators thrilling at other people's humilation.
He has said that he hated practising psychology, ( this is probably a paraphrase ) and he just wanted to kick the patients in the butt. Now he's getting paid to do it in a half baked way.
Well I'm off to find out when and where he's on hoping it's the afternoon as I'm off for bone density test this am. Have a good day /afternoon !
