Has anyone had the uterine ablation done? Did anyone take coumadin and have it done? I want all the good, bad and ugly stories if you don't mind. I know all the technical details now I want real stories about it. Thanks! Flibble

Hi Fibble,

My sister had uterine ablation done about six years ago now. She was having constant bleeding so bad she'd pass out. I was with her. The procedure itself only took a short time. She checked in around 7 a.m. that morning and by 1 p.m. I was driving her home. She did not have a hard time afterwards. I think she took a pain pill that night, but she was ready to be out and about the next day. She walked a bit gingerly that day, but by the second day she was really good.

She wasn't taking coumadin. That was pretty much the end of her menstrual cycles. She says she wishes she'd had it done years earlier, that it was the best thing she ever did for herself.

Sunny,
Thanks for the speedy reply! That would be wonderful if it were the end of those monthy miseries. Thanks again! Flibble

Flibble,

I had an ablation done and at the same time they did the procedure to look at the cysts on my ovary. Mind is blank on the name sorry. So I was completely put under. I should have insisted up front that the doctor keep me over night. My pain levels are bad enough on an everyday basis. However they discovered I didn't have ovarian cysts I had endometriosis and it was pretty severe. So a month later I had a hysterectomy including both ovaries.

With coumadin there are more concerns and you will need what ever doctor regulates your coumadin to approve the surgery. I would insist on being kept over as no surgery is minor when you have lupus. Just my opinion

Take care,
Karen

Hi...I am having it done in the next few weeks. I have had the ultrasound and the endometrial biopsy done and got the all clear to go ahead. Here is a board I found about it. http://p074.ezboard.com/fendometrialablati...discussionforum (http://p074.ezboard.com/fendometrialablationboardablationdiscussionforum)

Karen...I am having mine done in Thousand Oaks in an outpatient center, but now I am worried.

another option is a mirena iud - they are a progestin device and apply a progestin directly to your uterine lining on a continuous basis.

They are GREAT for heavy bleeding, most women stop bleeding altogether (ie no periods), require NO SURGERY, and they last for 5 years.

I have had one for nearly 5 years, and I love it. I am going to have mine replaced in October when it runs out.

yep, I LOVE MY MIRENA, best decision I ever made

Lovemythree,

I didn't mean to concern you unnecessarily. I take 18 different medications. 2 of which are DMARDS, so my immune system is very supressed. Also my pain levels are extremely high and I use very strong regulated narcotics. It is for those 2 reasons I should have been kept overnight. Doctors think you will be fine when you are on strong pain meds, the problem is the additional pain needs additional medication which I did not get the day of the ablation.

I would think someone who is on coumadin would also require additional monitoring since it is necessary to stop the coumadin for the surgery, at least I believe I am correct on that point.

Take care,
Karen

Karen,
I got the impression that I could stay on the coumadin. He never mentioned stopping it just that I would have to take Heperin(sp) after the ablation. So I guess that they give a shot of vitamin k before the surgery and Hep after to counter the K. I guess I should have asked more specific questions. Flibble

I am post meopause and am having and transvaginal ultra sound at the end of June to check for hyperplasia. I haven't had a period for 18 months and than started spotting in April. It lasted 1 day and never happened again. I also have APS and now wonder if I was actually passing clots...anyways if it is hyperplasmia, an aoption is the ablation. I can not take coumadin since I am allergic to it. I take plavix right now but when ever I have had to have any type of surgery of invasive procedure, I go off the plavix and on Lovenox injections for a weeke before and up to a week later.
