I have got a cold, a rare thing these days. Not only that, I have noticed that when I do get a cold since I have had Lupus, it isnt nearly so bad. I used to get the most awful colds which lasted many days and laid me very low, often taking to my bed. Is this a positive effect of having Lupus I wonder? :woohoo:

I am the same since having Lupus I just don't get colds or that's what I thought untill last November when I got the worst cold ever but then everyone seemed to have it it was obviously a bad bout of it.

Caper,

I used to wonder the same thing. I used to have an annual bout of bronchitis every January. Since I came out of remission I haven't had any bronchitis.

My theory since I am on 2 immune suppressors is that sleepin longer and also since I no longer work I don't have that stress in my life anymore.

I've noticed that, too. But then I always get a flu shot, and I found that getting that seems to help me fight off every kind of virus. :flowers:

weird I seem to pick up EVERYTHING that goes around and keep it 3-4 times longer than anyone else. I also notice I feel ever so much worse after having the flu shot for weeks afterwards I hurt so much worse and my facial rash comes out really bright too. I wonder why that is or if it is just that my disease has never actually been under control?

I too seem to have gotten "healthier" since diagnosed with lupus. I didn't get a cold all winter. You'd think it would be the opposite. Maybe it is the plaquinil that helps our immune system fight off such things. joyce

It's been a long time since I've had a plain old cold too. I think it has been a couple of years or more now. Before that, I used to get colds every year.

I'm not on any medication. For me, it could just be the fact that I've cut out a lot of bad things in my life while trying to get better.

Redrose, I am just in the same boat you are in. I catch it all and find it hard to get over anything.

Hey,

I'm also the same way as u, Red & Shop. I have a cold all the time- it goes away, n then i get another not that much later.

It takes Forever to get rid of, & always is bad. No matter what i do. I Always keep my hands clean- i keep hand sanitizer in my purse, n i don't even go out that often.

So, far this year, i started out w/ a cold, then a couple months in w/ Pneumonia, n about 1 1/2 months later Broncchitis, n Now finally getting over that a little over a month later, n back to a cold or whatever.

I've been like this since i was a kid- around the time i first got sick n dxed. I've been on all sorts of meds. since then too.

I just put it that my immune system is too busy fighting me, that i can't fight off anything. Since i too haven't ever been able to get myself completely under control.

Anyways, That is Great to hear about all those that don't get sick much anymore- that's one less thing to worry about n fight!

Take care all,
Alicia :coffee:

Hey AnM, I have been doing this for the past year and this is the firts year I have not caught even a tiny cold. It is a natural remedy but works like a charm! I should know  Anyway, I did much reading on Oil Of Oregano, every morning I put one to two drops under my toung, hold it as long as I can then chase it with cold water, tastes nasty, but it works. When I feel the slightest runny nose or sore throat coming I do it up to 3 times a day, that usually does the trick in one day. I even mix one to two drops with about 3tblsp of extra vergin olive oil and then dip a q-tip in it and swab my nose, it clears my sinuses so much better and quicker than allergie meds. You want to get the kind with a high percent of clavacol around 70%. I use Source Wellness brand and it is about 16.00 per ounce and lasts about a year for me, at least I still am using my first bottle.

I have lived most my life with cronic sinus infections, had pneumonia 9 times, hospitalized two times for it, excetra, you get the point. I am a chronic sickie, if someone sneezes around me, I am sick the next day. So this oil is working for me great. I just wanted to share that with you as I know what it is like to suffer with being sicker than your average joe whose cold lasts for only four days, and me for 2months.

Also, at my last GP visit I told him I take this daily, he murmered, I take it daily to. That is all he said and then changed the subject. I am sure so he does not get what his patients come in with.

I also use it for when I feel and ear infection coming on, it has not failed me yet.

A friend of my works at a hospital in Key West of all places(wish I did) she was talking to her boss about it, and he told her she had a wise friend and it could not hurt her to use it as for a defense against the germs she comes in contact with there.

So this is a personal record I have set for myself already, I hope to make it 2yrs then I will buy stock in the co that makes it :P Best wishes

Sincerely,

Oh me gawd! I have been thinking about this! I haven't had a cold for ages. It might be the plaquenil, because I have had the flu jab since the pericarditis in 2002 and was still getting colds then. I could usually guarantee I would get a cold two or three times a year;now I don't get any. I still come into contact with bugs on the ward as well.
It really is odd. I certainly ain't super immune, or my bloods would show up better than they do!

Hi,

I haven't been getting as many colds eather since dx sle Lupus, I thought it was because with Lupus our immune system is actually over active and as its fighting the colds and stuff it then turns on our body creating all the havoc. Thats why the immune suppressants are given to suppress the immune system so its not going after the good stuff. But I never really asked the dr, just my opinion.

I have only had one or two colds in the past three years...I almost never get sick. Which is strange, considering my husband is a teacher and is contantly sick from his students! But I never catch it...I'm not sure if it has anything to do with our immune systems being haywire...or if, like Karen says, it has more to do with most of us taking extra good care of ourselves....very interesting though....

Since my wife has had Lupus the last 18 years her bouts with colds are alot less. The common cold does in fact seem to have gone away.
However when she does get something it hits and hits hard and does not seem to want to leave or respond to treatment.
A few years ago she got pneumonia and it lasted for four months before she got rid of it.

She does get a flu shot every year or every year that she can. The past couple of years it has been very hard to get one around here.
She also gets the pneumonia shot. Now evry three years they had her doing it every year for awhile due to her other medications and the bout she had.

I asked my doctor why I don't get "common illnesses" anymore, like flu, strep, etc...he said that it is because my immune system is in hyperactive mode with the lupus...Which makes sense...

It wasn't until this spring when I went into a remission and my lupus was very quiet that I actually caught the flu!...I was just very careful to keep my fever under control and I went on antibiotics just in case it got into my lungs...it took me about 2 weeks to recover but it wasn't as bad as I thought...

I also used to get bronchitis every winter and I have not had it for almost two years now. That is odd, never thought about it until now.

Thanks for giving me something positive to think regarding lupus
