Hi, I have had 3 players in the past week at work who suggested apple cider vinegar, a shot a day of it, for arthritis.........has anyone heard of this or seen benefits of this? A website said use honey with it, what is that for? Anyway went looking and this is what I found:

Use the cider vinegar and honey treatment for arthritis and also apply cider vinegar externally to painful joints. This entails drinking a glass of water with two teaspoons of cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey three times a day. Local treatment can also be given by soaking the arthritic hand, or foot in a strong, comfortably hot solution of cider vinegar for ten minutes, two or three times a day - (a quarter of a cup of cider vinegar to one and a half cups of water). Arthritic knees can be attended to by making a poultice - soak the cloth in a mixture of cider vinegar and water, (as per above mixture) wring out and wrap it around the joint, then secure with a dry cloth to retain heat. When the wet cloth cools, it should be wrung out in the hot solution and applied afresh. Repeat several times, twice daily.

How can putting it on the outside help? Is it like Epsom Salt?

Any information you have would be appreciated!

Julbird,

There was a thread on apple cider vinegar just a couple of months ago. Do a search of this forum with the term vinegar and set the date to any date.

This link is to a quakcwatch article on the foolishness of the promoters for drinking apple cider. As for outside the body that is possible. But I don't think anything filters that far into the body. Epsom Salts help draw out infection but there is usually an open wound. It can also help with the PH balance of your skin which is not the same as painful joints.

Many claims have been made about apple cidar vinegar.
I read a paper a few years ago that listed some of what it was claimed to have helped.
Everything from acne, Arthritis, High Colesterol and many more.
As far as appling it externally to an area for arthristis it said it is much the same idea as a pain rub.
The acid it contains is a mild irriatant that can cause some heat to the area, if mixed with warm water or heated and used as a soak then it is much like taking a hot bath. The warm can give some temporary effect or relief. Bad part about it is that being a Acid it can be irriatating to areas of open lessions or dry scally skin.
It can also dry out the skin of used to often.

End answer was may not help may not hurt. Try it if you like and if it helps then you may want to continue it, if not then you are not out alot.
There is no medical evidence that it helps but many people sware by things that there are no medical evidence for such as brass bracelets and magnets.

As with anything this should be discussed with your Doctor before doing it.
