My wife has been diagnosed with Lupus for eighteen years.
Since that time we have found a host of drugs that she has adverse reactions to.
Reactions very anywhere from Leg Pain, Rash or hives, Blisters, Internal bleeding and full body function shutdown.
Some of the drugs she has had problems with are Naproxen - Blurred Vision / Hives, Acetaminophen - Hives / Blisters, Plavix - Blisters / Internal Bleeding, Lipitor - Hives / Leg Pains, Hydroxychoroquine - Hives, Magnesium Sulfate ( Epom Salts )- Hives, Zocor - Hives / Leg Pains, Niaspan - Hives, Lamisil - Hives / Blisters, Guafenex - Hives, Imuran - Toxicity / Failure to produce Blood
I'm wondering if any others have had this same type of problems with drugs since being diagnosed with Lupus ? It has got to the point that Doctors are afraid to try many other drugs because of the severe reactions that she has had to some of these.

Hi, most doctors hate addressing my allergies to meds as it makes it hard for them to prescribe things for me.
I am VERY allergic to the following;
Pinacillian (sp?), can kill me.
N-Saids, make me vomit.
Cephlosporins, give severe rash and heart beats fast like it is going to jump out of my throat.
Anything with Codine, including Vicoden, severe rash and hives
ALL COX2 inhibitors, had heart attack, and similar reactions on same class of drugs
Asprin makes me sick to my stomach.
Ultram helps with pain, but I have to take Benadryl with it but can tolorate it ok.
Kefilex made my throught swell with blisters from the back of my throught to the outside of my face, almost died from that too.
I am sure there are more, but you get the idea, yes I am ultra sensative to meds.
Sincerely,

Hey,
I have a number of allergies to meds. also. But, I suppose it's been since i was dxed.- except i never had to many differ. drugs when i was real little- ~ up until 8 or so. Since i 1st got sick at about 12 yrs. old. I don't know what any reacs. to any meds. before n after Lupus. ;)
But, I have a Severe Reaction to Penicillan, & ANYthing in that family or Like it- I Always stress that to docs.
Cause once i was in the hospital n they knew i was allergicx to Pen., n gave me something that was like it, n still had the same reac. I was P'd.
Anyways, Ibuprofen- anything w/ it- aspirin, advil, etc. etc. ALL those meds.. Get weird reac. to that- Felt sick, n Needles all in my face. So, that takes care of 100 different meds. haha.
Percocet- nausia, throwing up, real sick, headache, etc. Codiene- similar reac.,
There's something else, i can't remember- I think i actually did have Penicillan when i was a kid, before dxed. n had found out then was allergic. I was real little, n mom then had them put it in my charts.
Anyways, yea, my reacs. to meds. i'm allergic to aren't fun. They usually are real bad allergies.
n some antibiotics. Then there's all the meds. I can't take.
Take care, hope your wife is doing as best as can be- u are a Great husband!!

Hi,
Just the usuals for me:
Penicillan - anaphalactic shock-life threatening allergic reaction.
Bactrim or any sulpha based antibiotics - welts/rashes and stomach problems
Pethidene which is a synthetic version of morphine - anaphalactic shock
Ibuprofen - all over swelling and weird dizziness/head stuff
Last time I had Pred I started developing diabetes after a couple of weeks :o on a low dose - never happened before and I've had it in the past but usually have high doses over short period. I also have the usual probs with pred but slightly moreso, towards psychosis/mania, not just your usual unable to sleep and jumping out of your skin that many get.
I'm thankfully ok with my NSAIDS, Plaquenil and Imuran - but I do have to start low on doses and work my way up, that way my body accepts it. If they give me a great huge dose of something to start with my body doth protest!
love
Lily

Let me pass on a warning to you all...I had Stevens Johnsons Syndrome 9 years ago. And 15 years before that I had a similar reaction but not as bad as the S.J.S. it still put me in the hospital. But 9 years ago it was a trip to **** that I almost did not recover from and I still wear the scare from it. Be very careful...if in dought don't take it...when I was 15 the doctor dosed me with Asprin and I had a bad reaction. I told them I thought i was alergic to it but they said it was imposible. Today things are a little different and doctors are a little more aware. I can hardly take anything...so I understand what your wife is going through. Just be careful and get to the hospital right away if she blisters. Hope everything goes well.

aspirin in large doses causes a rash
codeine causes hives
plaquenil in doses higher than 200mg per day makes me vomit
pred causes my blood pressure to get very high
scary isnt it?

Hi - I have only a few meds that I have reactions to but they are pretty unsual and severe reactions from what I understand:
Sulfa drugs: Convulsions/Seizures
Immuran: put me in the hospital with near kidney shut down and toxic blood poisoning
Augmentin (Antibiotic): VIOLENT vomiting and intenstinal distress
Methotrexate: I had a bad reaction to both pills and injecitons to - for some reason this builds up in my body and makes me feel like I have food poisioning - nausea- headaches body aches etc.
I'm sure there are a few others I can't think of right now- If I do I'll come back and add them.
Interesting thread, I guess we do react to things differently than "normals"
Take good care- Chris

Thank you - I wondered if I would find a trend and it kind of looks like there could be.
To be Honest I had to look up Steven Johnsons to see what it was.
I had never heard of it before but then seen it was related to TEN.
I have wondered for some time if this was what happened to my wife with Plavix.
She had blisters on over 90% of her body and it messed her blood up so bad it poured through the lining of her lungs and stomach.
They tried to do transfusions and had to stop because she was pouring blood into her lungs so fast it was causing congestive failure.
They had to ventilate her and had to give her 12 units of albumin to get enough into her blood that it wouldn't pass through the organs the way it was.
They told me that they had never had to give anyone over 4 units of albumin before at the hospital she was in but that they had seen similar cases as hers from Plavix before.
She does have scarring from the blisters but that is mild compared to what it could have been. She was ventilated for three weeks and was then taken off.

I can say I have reactions to many many drugs and sometimes the injectables will make me react but the pills won't. Mine are too numerous to list but almost every antibiotic is off limits which is frustrating when an infection crops up. My doctors are really careful of new meds now with me especially as my mother did not keep track of my reactions and which drugs I reacted to as a child. I have heard and can't recall where that multiple drug allergies is common in AI diseases especially all forms of lupus.
