Hello all, I'm very confused and scared at these sudden symtoms displayed by my 15 yo.

First a little history:

Her father has MS and Reynaulds disease.

Last summer she was hospitalized for 8 days for a sudden severe headache (she reported feeling as though someone had hit her in the back of her head with a hammer). She was misdiagnosed with pseudo tumor cerebri ( false brain tumor) which presents as having increased spinal fluid pressure that causes bulging of the optic nerve. I believe this was a snap diagnosis because she had been on tetracycline for acne, only for 2 weeks, and that is one of the causes of PTC. After 6 spinal taps, obstensibly to relieve the pressure from too much spinal fluid, and not even getting enough spinal fluid out to be able to take an opening pressure reading (I know, as an ex-nurse I demanded to be present and held my daughter on her side during the taps). They finally after 5 days called (on the phone) a neuro-opthomologist from National Childrens Hospital to get his take on the whole thing. Turns out that his diagnosis was a tear in her dura mater somewhere, whether around the brain itself or in the spinal dura, and that her worsening headaches would go away with a "blood patch" where they take the patients own blood and inject it into the spinal fluid (kind of a reverse spinal tap) the blood then circulates like the spinal fluid, finds the tear and clots there, closing the tear. Much like a scab on a cut anywhere on the body. She did get better, but never has been the same since. Due to all the spinal taps she has had pain, numbness, and at times decreased circulation in her legs. She has pain in her lower back all the time. She has missed almost the entire school year due to continuing back pain, headaches and fatigue. My once vibrant, outgoing, physically active young lady, has disappeared.

Yesterday she presented with a butterfly-shaped rash across her cheeks and nose, very tender to the lightest touch, I thought she was having an allergic reaction to something and applied Benadryl cream to the rash I also gave her 25mg of Benadryl which she promptly vomited up. Her cheeks and nose are somewhat swollen, she has "achy joints" and enlarged lymph glands in her neck. She slept somewhat durring the night after finally being able to keep down a second dose of Benadryl and an ice pack to her face. When I checked her this morning nothing had changed.

Besides a trip to the emergency room, and it's a Holiday here, where I know the only thing they will do is take blood and urine and refer her to a "specialist". Does anyone have a similar history that they've experienced or know of.

Anxiously awaiting replies, other than take her to see a rheumatologist, that I know to do and will call tomorrow to get an appointment.

Thank you so much,
Leslie

Be careful of Stevens Johnsons Syndrome If she starts to blister take her to the hospital right away. I had alot of the same symptoms as a child at 14 when I first started to show signs of Lupus. Extreme headache everyday throug out the summer. Other things followed later as achy joints and butterfly rash. But 9 years ago I developed S.J.S. form medication and common pain relieves she may not be able to tolerate some meds and if she throwing up I would stop the drug completely. I hope everything goes alright.

P.S. If blisters start to appear get her to the hospital immediately and tell them about S.J.S believe it or not alot of doctors haven't heard of it...but resently there has been more news about it.

Just concerned

Hi and welcome,

I think if it was my daughter I'd take her to the ER, holiday or not hun. She needs to be seen. Things can and do change suddenly sometimes with Lupus.

I'm sorry she's had such a torrid time of it, and all those spinal taps, blood patch etc as a result  As you've stated she definitely needs to see a Rheumy to find out whats going on and the sooner the better. Take a look at the not diagnosed section, pinned notices and also our home page with lots of info on SLE.

Lupus presents slightly differently in everyone and it mimics a LOT of other medical conditions, making it a challenge to diagnose. But with a Lupus specialist investigating that is your best course of action.

Good luck and let us know how you get along.

love

Hi Leslie & Welcome to the site,

I'm sorry to hear what has brought u here; n that your daughter is not feeling well!!

I first got sick when i was a pre-teen, n can understand how she can feel. & I hope u get to the doctor soon n find some answers to all this real soon too.

For now, I would Definitely take Pictures of the rash on her face. By the time u get to the doc. it could have gone.
So, this way u can show them to him/her; this can greatly help.

Also, I did want to mention- i know u said u knew to go to the Rheumy, but if this is looking toward a CTD (connective tissue disease)- Go to a rheumy that Specializes in CTD's, as Lupus is.

Also, in the meantime of getting to the apptmt. U could ask your GP to run the ANA test- a screening test. n can (s)he maybe can run some tests for the rheumy, so they has some results by the time u get in. But, the rheumy should still run tests for him/herself n a bunch more that they run to be thorough.

Have her- your daughter- keep a journal of day to day, how she is feeling. Write up a list of her symptoms to take to the doctor, so u don't forget any- Past n present, the most important on top- med. histoy, fam. history- All that you've mentioned here, basically

I wish u the best, & your daughter!! I hope she feels better!!
Take care,
Alicia :coffee: :flowers:

Thank you all SO much for your input and support. Chelsea is feeling better, the rash is completely gone ( before i got a picture :( ). We're seeing her GP tommorw and won't be able to see the Rheumy for over a month.
I loved the idea of a daily journal and bought her a new one, just for how she's feeling.

Again, Thanks to all of you who responded and I'll keep you up to date with what's going on. In the mean time, good thoughts and daily prayers are being sent your ways.

Sincerely and with gratitude,

Leslie

Leslie,
My daughter, Becca was diagnosed with CNS lupus five years ago at the age of thirteen, following a horrible summer of severe migraine headaches. She used to say it felt like someone was stabbing her with a burning knife. Thankfully we were already being seen by a pediatric rheumalogist who said that headaches just don't go on forever. She was hospitalized repeatedly for pain control. She had a spinal tap, echocardiogram, chest x-ray, tons of lab work. At the end of the summer she was diagnosed with lupus, with these symptoms ,ANA-, VDRL + , anemia, elevated SED rate, plerual effusion and a malar rash (which would come and go) plus severe migraines. Becca was sick all that first summer, as I didn't know that exposure to the sun just pushed her into a flare. She would feel better so I would let her go swimming (in the sun, again) and she would be back in the hospital with in hours. The first year was difficult as we tried to find a way to control the migraines, which we eventually used acupuncture to prevent as well as get rid of a headache. She too missed tons of school her freshman year of high school.
She just finished for freshman year of college. She is trying to be independent so she doesn't always make the best choices, but she is relatively healthy. She needs lots of sleep, stays out of the sun and heat, wear sunscreen daily, takes 5 meds daily, and tries to eat healthy. She loves school and always wants to be involved in lots of activities. She is happy and outgoing. She has very strong faith in God.She has learned her own "normal", which isn't neccessarily want other people would consider "normal".
I would definitely encourage YOU to keep a journal of what is happening besides how she is feeling. Things to kept track of; 1)sleeping, when and how much, 2) Activities, indoor and outdoor, how long, 3) weather, sunny, hot, cold, rainy, 4) stress, good and bad, 5) mood, depressed, sad ,6) eating and drinking, too much or little. Becca kept her own journal of the thoughts, and feelings which was a wonderful outlet for her to express herself. She wrote some fabulous poetry that year.
Please don't hestitate to ask any questions. Take one day at a time. Going to the ER is never a bad idea if she really feels bad.
Take care of yourself.
Another mother who cares,
Marian
