I am 26, but I was dianosed with Lupus when I was 23, and I would like to have a couple of kids after I get married. I am currently engaged. my lupus is not that bad and I am functioning somewhat but I still get tired alot. Would it be difficult for me to get pregnent when I get married? What are the risks involved? Is there someone out there who has had a child and suffers from lupus who can tell me what is involves.
Thanx,
Noosa

Hello Noosa
Many lupus pregnancies are perfectly normal. The risks depend on how the lupus is affecting the mother and how severely and also if the pregnancy is affected by lupus - some people unfortunately get worse either during or after.
But there are ways of managing flares these days
It is very individual and essential to be in the care of specialists.
Ideally the mother should be stable and off all medicines for six months before conceiving.
All the best

Hi there, I am 23yrs old and have lupus and APS. I can also let you know that I have one completley healthy 3 year old who completley changed my health throughout the pregnancy and after. I suffered alot of symptoms but once I fell pregnant it seemed to supress the lupus and continued to until only recently. However my bad news is that the lupus seemed to be re-activated when I fell pregnant again and so at the momment I am suffering symptoms. For different people lupus can react differently on your body, the great news is as long as your under an obsteatrician who has experience with the condition and you are monitered for signs of activity of the lupus usually there is no problem with child bearing in lupus patients all though obviously the monitoring is essential as complications are inevitably more likley then in a non-lupus patient. I think half the key is preperation in your own health and good relationships with your health care workers, most definitley let them know of your intention to have children and they can help you prepare physically and try to guide you as to when your lupus is possibly inactive. I really hope all goes well for you and I offer this guidance purely from personal experience not medical knowledge, however there are some really good links from this site that people have posted about information on pregnancy and lupus. Take care and I wish you the best for your family. Lucy
