Hi all
I'm about to start taking Gabapentin and was wondering if anyone has managed to find out how it causes weight gain. My pain doc said it wasn't clear what caused it but maybe someone else has been privvy to more info?
I'll be taking 100 mg 3 times a day increased gradually to 300 mgs 3 x per day.
Thanks much

Starr,
I don't know why it causes weight gain I just know my rheumy told me it does. It may retain water as part of it as sometimes my ankles are swollen more than the usual from the disease.
Take care,
Karen

Hi, I'm not sure if Neurontin actually "causes" weight gain. But I do know it interferes with the signals that tell you that you've already eaten. I never, ever feel like I'm satisfied with the food I've eaten, even if my stomach is so full it hurts. I still have this sense in my brain that I am on the verge of starvation. I have managed to lose some weight in the past several months -- about 15 or so pounds. But it has been very hard and has meant that I am virtually obsessed with hunger all the time.
Good luck,
Sunny

Dear Sunny and Karen
Thanks for your replies. It's helpful to know whether I could have any control over possible weight gain. I have to be careful with water retention anyhow so will try and keep salt intake low and make sure I have veggie soup to fill up on
Hope you are both doing as well as poss at the moment.
