A post in another area made me decide to post this question.
My wife bruises very easy since she was diagnosed with Lupus. Seems the smallest pump causes these bruises which tend to come on and stay and stay and stay.
She has asked all of her doctors about it and has had many blood tests which they tell her are " Pretty Good " meaning better then they had been not necesarily normal.
But that this is fairly normal for Lupus patients to bruise easy.
How many of you have these problems as well ?

Hi,

If your wife is on prednisone it can make this more obvious. I'm not on it at the moment but I do tend to bruise quite easily anyway. No particular reason has been found except I often have a (slightly) low red cell count in bloodwork. Every reason for that was investigated - the conclusion - Lupus.

Hi,

any circulation problem can cause easier bruising I believe. So APS/HUGHES/Stickyblood/Lupus Coagulant is known for bruising. That is one syndrome that goes by all those names and more I think.

some Vasculitis can cause bruising.

Prednisone as Lily said and Methotrexate. I would hazard a guess that imuran and cellcept probably cause bruising as well.

Take care,
Karen

Thank You for the responces.
Makes me feel some better.
She is on Ped. as you said and she also has raynauds and vasculitis as well.
As far as Lupus sticky blood she has had that very bad. To the point that it combined with inflamation of an artery caused a heart attack type is incedent.

They used blood thinner to help cure the imediate problem and get her out of danger but the real answer was high level injections of steriods to get the imediate threat under control and end the inflamation.

The doctors have all said that it is normal and nothing to really worry about and just cautioned her to one be careful of even the small bumps if at all possible and two to let them know if anything new happens with them or if they seem to be getting extreme.

I find that not only do I bruise easily, I get hematomas very easily. Some have lasted for 1 1/2 years now. I wonder what I'm going to look like in a few years after all the blood draws and infusions I have...

It is so ironic you asked this question because that is one of the things that I am going to ask my rhemie about next week when I see her for a follow-up. I have had a decrease in my blood count so I know that can cause easy bruising and I have also heard that certain meds can cause it too. However, tonight when I was taking a bath, My leg.. which had been killing me all day.. had another "brusie" on it that was new. While trying to figure out where I might have hit on something, I set and watched another so-called bruise begin to surface on the lower half of my leg. It has a knot under it now that popped up first and hasn't went to full bruise stage. I am sure by morning it will probably look just lovely. :(

I have had these problems for a long time and the only answers I have found is that it is normal for me and live with it :( .

Pretty darn flustrating though!

Hi

I haven't been dx with Lupus yet but am under investigation. I have however, been told that I have a form of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. There are several different types of this and mine is either classic or hypermobility type but EDS does also cause easy bruising, along with atrophic scarring, thinning skin etc.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be a lot of GP's or Rheumy's who know a great deal about the condition, so mine is learning gradually but it may well be worth getting checked out. EDS is also hereditary.

Hope your wife gets some answers soon.

Take care

Dee

I have always bruised very easily even wehn I was a little girl. Bruising for me is just a way of my life. This was before Lupus was dx. ;) so I am of no help to you in answering your question.
