Hi there, I was wondering if anyone could suggest any insurance companies that will cover Lupus. I have been phoning around all day but with no joy. I can get basic cover but no one will cover any symptoms which may be linked to Lupus whilst I'm away (and apart from breaking my leg I think most things can be related to my Lupus if they tried hard enough). Anybody else had similar problems getting travel insurance? I'm off to Africa to work in a orphanage for blind and deaf kids and will be out there a while so insurance is a must. Probably not the most sensible activity for someone who has extreme photo-sensitivity but if you want something enough, its got to be worth a try.

Africa Trip details:- if anyone has any spare hats or kiddies shoes which they no longer need, the orphanage would be very greatful for them. http://hometown.aol.co.uk/LManouch/index.html

We have had alot of trouble getting Insurance. When my wife was employed her employer would have paid full price for Health Insurance but it was a small office and he could not get anyone to cover her.
He tried all kinds of companies and since it was an insurance office he had no problems locating companies. But they all said the same thing no life insurance for Lupus patients and no health insurance.

Most just said point blank no it wont be done.

Sorry could not be of any help to you. The only thing that helped us is that I work for a large company that has a big enough employee list to get them to drop all exclusions for health reasons and to drop all waiting periods as well.
I have talked to some employers who had insurance but they would not pay anything for my wife for the first year or first eighteen months then they would kick in.

I am going away for a month, leaving next week - I have just got travel coverage which excludes my lupus.

I am taking LOTS of extra prednisone, and if I get sick and can't figure it out myself I will ring a doctor back home, or email. If I get REALLY sick I will climb on a plane and come home (not planning on doing that, but you never know).

Anyway, I plan on not getting sick ! The main thing is I am covered for the unexpected, and really, lupus is not unexpected. Its something that I have learned to manage. I have very active cns lupus, but 60 mg of pred takes care of most things, and although I hate being on doses that high (my regular daily dose is 20mg) I am unlikely to come to any harm. I travel with a coaguchek so I am able to monitor my inr and keep it in range.

Think positive and have a great trip !

Would the insurance that you can get (that disallows lupus) at least cover you if you get sick, have to change your travel plans, and come home early? That alone might be worth it. :flowers:

based on the policy I have, if the insurance doesn't cover lupus, then no it wouldn't cover the cost of an earlier flight home.

But, the other option is to have a ticket that can be changed (which is what I have), so I can just rebook and come home early if I had to. Not that i am planning on that !

either which way, the london to new zealand trip is SSSOOO long I think I would want to be feeling better before i went home.

cheers

Thank you, for all your replies. I suppose i should get some comfort in not being the only one but its so frustraiting that there isnt any company out there which can help. Oh well, I guess I better make sure I don't get ill whilst away. Thank you once again everybody xx
