I've longed to have a baby since I was child....and I now have a steady boyfriend who I want to spend the rest of my life with and have children with. I'm scared though now because of having Lupus. I know there is higher chance of miscarriage but what about the actual health of the child? Will I be able to have a "lupus free" child? My rheumy is a specialist in pregnancy when a women has a pos AA so I know I can trust when he says I'll still be able to have children. But what I haven't got around to asking him about are the health effects on the baby...
Maybe some of you could let me know how the health of your child is....I want to know if the risks are worth even having a baby
I hope they are

HELLO, I am Angy,
The only thing I can say for advice is I have seen children who have mothers with lupus come our just fine and have nothing wrong with them, just that their a little smallar then most children when they are born. If your pregnacy is monatored all the time, then the risk of complications can be monatored and maybe even stoped. When talking with your doctor ask to see an obgyn first and talk it over, the doctor will know all the risks involved and will help you change your medications. If needed. The highest risk though is trying to get pregnet, keeping the baby to full turm, research it first and allways keep your doctors posted.

hi casey,
as the mother of 2 i would like to just say the risks are worth it, I had my son before i knew i had lupus, my daughter is now 2 and a half she has no problems at all. i was monitored very closely and stayed on my medication.
sometimes i do find it hard when i have a flare, but a have a very supportive partner and my son is nine so understands a great deal.

Casey...I share your worries. All the research that I have done in the past makes me feel that if I can get into remission there is a good possibility that I could have a healthy baby. And hey....I have two very healthy parents that somehow made me!!!
Thank you to those who shared your positive stories...always nice to hear, made me smile...and most importantly ... gave me hope.

Casey and all,
I am not yet pregnant and will share with you what the high risk obstrician said to me yesterday. (I had to see him before i got preganant.)
Now I will start with everyone of us is different but he said that many women have babies with lupus without knowing that they have it. That SSA antibodies (i have those) are more common than we are lead to believe and that thousanads of women with truly awful blood works and horrible diseases worse (yes worse) than lupus, manage to pop out a baby. It is a natural process and in most women the increase in cortisone we get when pregnant is actually the best thing we can have.
Of course we need to manage our health more than most but we do that anyway. He also said that unless I took huge amounts of medications he could see no reason for me not to have a natural birth. :)
He said most doctors panic at the thought of a lupus patient giving birth and that they really dont have the faintest idea. He was more concerned with my husbands sperm count than me. :D He said that there are three sexes female, male and pregnant. That the body reacts differently and I should not worry about it. If he thought I had any risk of being ill he would not recommend it.
So, if you are serious about getting pregnant I would suggest you go see a high risk obstrician who can truly give you an insight. Oh and he is about 50 and I was told has never been sued despite the number of truly awful cases he has seen with diabetes and HIV who have been told they are lost causes.
Hope this helps, it did me. :cloud9:
Bye for now
Jodie
