Great news that I'm pregnant. We are super excited since this is my first baby. I'm in 13th week now. I have been on 400mg plaquenil for past 8 months. And I'm still under med as doctors says "it's safe" now.
I'm wondering anyone have any experience taking plaquenil during the pregnancy. And any particular problem with baby? I just hope my baby is doing great.
Thank you for any suggestion and comment.

CONGRATULATIONS MiMi!!! :cloud9: Although I cannot offer you any personal expericences with pregnancy and Plaquenil I can tell you that my fertility doctor, my GP and my Rheumy all told me that if I ever was lucky enough to get pregnant I could continue taking the Plaquenil. A friend of mine who has lupus just had a baby, she was taking Plaquenil for the first few months of her pregnancy, then went off of it since she was not in the middle of a flare and then went back on it soon after her perfectly healthy precious daughter was born. I suggest you talk to both your OB and your Rheumy (or GP - whichever is treating your lupus) and double check for your own peace of mind. Hey it's your baby and your body. It has been my experience that doctors really won't mind you asking a second time. But don't forget to trust what they tell you too. ;) Please don't forget to keep us posted; this is a very exciting time for you. I wish great health and happiness for you all! :flowers:

Hi Mimi
congratulations on the pregnancy. My rhumy told me yesterday that i have to come off plaquinil before pregnancy, I want to have another child, my son is now five and it has taken me this long to want to do it again (son born at 28 weeks), now that I know what I have got (no one knew back then) SLE I asked rhumy as I want to do it soon, before i get too old. He said I should wait, about two years once it is under control and off the plaq, I have heard though that different doctors say different things and I am sure your doctor knows what he is doing.
Good luck and have a happy and healthy pregnancy.

Congratulations! I was on plaquenil with my last pregnancy and breastfeeding: I have heard that there is a slight risk of hearing problems for the baby but mine was certainly absolutely fine! He is one year old now and very healthy and happy. I am now 16 weeks pregnant with my second baby and everything is fine with him/her: I have had a flare but am now ok again. I know doctors' advice differs but in the UK one is told to stay on plaquenil if it is controlling your lupus when you become pregnant, as the risk of uncontrolled lupus is greater to the baby and you than the risk of plaquenil. I have found it a fantastic drug with no side effects.
I wish you the very very best for your pregnancy and do remember that you have EVEN more reason to be tired and to need to rest, so accept all those offers of help and those irritating people who tell you to put your feet up and read a book! Make the most of it, you've got a fantastic excuse!
And you CAN cope with a baby when you have lupus, I promise, even if it's a bit daunting to think about it. I have a nice safe room with lots of toys, and I lie down on the bed while my son charges around the room expending energy!
love

Thank you all for sharing the great experiences with me.
Hatty, yes my doctors say the same thing. My lupus doesn't seems flare up at all but I should continue my med just in case. My husband does aggree with it. That is why I'm still on the med.
I do think of coming off by talking to the doctors. But doctors here are all agree that it's safe. I'm in New York City. I even check with the lupus specialist, all of them told me it's safe and the hospitals do have those program for pregnant women with lupus and they all doing great.
Now I'm on 15th week, baby and I are both doing great.
I'll keep you guys update.

Time flies, I'm in 23 weeks pregnant now and everything goes well so far.
I'm still on plaquenil and I don't think this will be stopped at anytime soon yet.
However, I have a question for anyone who have any experience. I know Hatty did the breastfeeding while taking plaquenil. I'm wondering if there is any others doing the same and what will be the risk breastfeeding while taking plaquenil?
Thank you
