Hi, just Donna here. Since being diagnosed with SLE 6 months ago, I have lost a lot of hair, to the point where you could see my scalp, no matter how long it took me blow drying and straightening it. Anyway, last week I went and had a perm because I thought anything would look better than lank straight hair with bits of baldy scalp. It's worked a treat!! As well as making my hair look a lot thicker, you can't see my scalp at all. The best of all is that I just leave it to dry naturally, so no aching hands and wrists while I hold the hairdrier.
I just wanted to share something positive with you all.
Love Donna xxxx

Hi, I was diagnosed with SLE in march 2000, then in the July My haor started to fall out, it started in the middle at top of head and just got bigger and bigger!! I was totally bald in middle of top of head, I looked like a monk!! My hair was long at that point, so I had it cut short, but then decided to shave it all off and raised some money for lupus UK.. I felt much happier with it all gone!! I then just wore a baseball cap!! My rheumatologist could not believe what had happened!! so I had soe photos taken and he uses them when giving lectures!!! the dermatologist put it doen to alopecia caused by Body shock of the diagnosis of SLE.. My hair soon grew back! with a nice wave in the area that had fallen out.. since then I have had no other problems!!
Just wanted to share my story.. it helped by making something positive out of a dreadful occurence ie getting sponsored for shaving it off

:afraid: I have had my hair fall out as well. My  daughter told me to do "the comb over" like other bald people. Think I'll try the perm instead and kick her in the rump

So I bounce on this site every time I'm feeling awful, I think I put my good advice on the wrong message board so here it is again.
To cover up hair loss, there is some spray for men, if you've seen 10 things i hate about you the dad is watching the commercial. It covers thinning hair, I think it is great on womens hair, it bonds to the skin and hair and is easy to wash out. It also creates thickness near the scalp. It's about 5 dollars.
Hair extensions are great if you braid thin lines of hair accross your head 4 on mine and sew the wefts to the thin braids with regular thread that matches, stayed in my hair 1 and a half months, this costs about 50 dollars for real hair. I had my sister do them, took about 4 hours our first time, then trim it to blend best with your hair. It's great because I then only have to wash my hair weekly, I wet it and pin it up into a glamerous hairstyle.
You can also use fake hair of the same color, dye your hair to match, it is much easier to match your hair to fake or artificial. Curly or wavy is easier to disquise. I dye mine black because that is the easiest. Which you can order online, if you have any questions on the details of any of these solutions ask, I like to look vain and my mom is a cosmotologist, so we play a lot and we think outside the box.
Folic Acid is the main ingredient in hair growth pills and it can be bought for about 5 dollars at wallmart. You can also buy hair growth pills over the counter at the walmart for about 4 dollars which I think they work, and just as good as the expensive stuff.
I like Rogaine, when I've just loss a lot of hair, it sprouts new starts and it's the scalp that is the dead give away to how much hair you are losing.
Do not color or perm your hair during a flare up and don't let dye onto your scalp!!
I love mousse, cuz you don't have to wash your hair often and it doesn't get all flaky like gel after a couple days.
Give it a shot!!

 Hi I also have very noticable hair loss both patches of alopecia and hair thinning, I try to use hats as much as possible and this really does help, also it is good fun accesorising with all the different types out there, also scarves can be added to hair,I've even pleated coloured wool in with my hair to have wacky colours, this covers up some of the alopecia areas as you just cover the patches up with a hairslide and the wool or ribbons.I have long hair and also put it up in pigtails etc with wool added it does look cool and you can have different coloured streaks to match your outfits. :hello: :woohoo: :woohoo:
