Hi all. My hubby bought me a book for our anniversary on how to heal yourself.......... I didn't know what to think, getting it as a gift, but he said I got for you so I could heal you myself......which I thought was sweet. Anyway, there is articles about aspertame and I know this subject they say and Lupus has no proof of being connected. I just was wondering what everyone's thoughts were about this and if they notice a difference when intaking it and/or stopping it. I am going to do a trial period and stop all of it. I drink diet everything and crystal light.
Curios that's all. Paula

Hi Paula, I don't like the taste of aspertame -- actually the aftertaste -- so I use Sweet n Low at home. But I also drink diet soda that has aspertame in it. I have friends who swear the stuff makes their heads spin and demon voices come out of their ears. I never have noticed it makes me feel anything. If going without makes you feel better, then definitely go without. I do notice that when I cut out everything carbonated I feel better. That includes carbonated waters. I don't konw why, but as a result I tend to stick with ice tea and lemonade rather than soda or bubbly waters.
Good luck, and be sure to check with your dr. before starting any supplements or herbs suggested in your new book.

Hi- I believe that Aspertame is a neuro-toxin that will negatively affect some people. Not sure about it CAUSING lupus but it gave me terrible headaches so I stopped consuming it.
A healthy friend of mine said it caused him to feel sleepy and brain-fogged. Those problems lifted when he quit drinking diet sodas with nutrasweet.
Feel well, Kiley

Hi,
I have not eaten/consumed anything with aspartame in it for well over ten years. I have been the sickest in the last 3 years. So if it's affected others, it seems to have absolutely no impact on my own personal health.

HI,
I have never cared for anything made with diet/artificial sweetners.
If you are interested I have the link to the Urban legend about aspartame.

You might want to check out snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com/toxins/aspartame.asp). I'm sure it's the one Karen was talking about.
I drink a lot of beverages with aspartame in them and haven't noticed anything wrong. (Others may argue with that last statement... :P)

It doesn't do anybody any harm not to consume artificial sweeteners.
My theory is that people who drink lots of diet or any fizzy drinks, or lots of anything come to that, are probably not eating well.
But then I can't understand why anybody wants to, never having had a coke until my early 20's and now only an annual one to remind myself how horrible it is
The full "aspartame root of all evil " is cruelly stupid. As if every disease or condition including congenital abnormalities is caused by aspartame. Millions of people throughout the world never touch the stuff.
Just my rant for today
Cheers !

Kiley,
I don't doubt that aspartame causes you headaches. MSG gives me horrible headaches. but that is not the same as saying that aspartame helps cause lupus or ms or anything else in the general population.
The Aspartame "scare" has been proven false in the statements that make general assumptions. We all are different and we will all have our own quirks but I cant take my MSG problem and equate it to lupus in a general sense.
To eat healthier is a good idea for everyone. And people with lupus often have more allergies than the general population. However there is no research showing that most of us have a particular allergy.
Take care,
Karen

I have seen alot of stuff on Aspertame for a few years now.
As many as I can find that says it is bad you can find an equal amount that says that it isn't or that it is unproven claims.
The end result is that I have no real opinion on it but remain open to the possibility ether way.
I would say that if you feel there could be something to the claims then stop using it for awhile and see if it makes a diference in how you feel.
If it don't you are not out anything other then a few cans of coke or what ever and if it does then you have gained.
After doing without it for awhile you may find that it didn'thelp any but you no longer want it because you got used to not having it.
I worked with one guy who swore that this and a couple of other additives messed up his "Lebido" and prevented him from having a good time the night he had it.

ROFLMBO RWB  I wonder if one of those additives came in the form of alcohol? Where I come from we call that brewers droop ;) :hehe:

Well, just to let you all know, I stopped it, and no difference, Lupus still there, symtpoms still there.
The only thing that has changed is that now I drink water and have no preference for anything else.
After a while of doing something, I think your body and mind change to it and keep satisfied.
So, I'll just drink my water. I don't have the urger to drink coke/pepsi, or anything else...... just water now. Not that it is a bad thing...
