Just wondering if getting a tattoo effects us if we have SLE?

Jem,,
That is something that you should talk over with your doctor... I got one at the end of July,, and didn't consult my doctor,,, right now I am going through a major flare,,, not saying that it was the tattoo that did it,,, but honestly I am not sure. But if you are not sure whether or not you should get one, then you should consult your doctor.
Hope that helps!!!

I got a tattoo before I was diagnosed with lupus--before I had had any major symptoms, really. My rheumy is not sure (and none of us could be, since no one knows for sure what causes lupus) but he thinks the tattoo may have sent me into my first flare. I would second the advice to talk to your rheumy about this.
Oh, and BTW, kudos to you for doing your research. Even if your rheumy clears it, a tattoo is still a major decision.

 Hiya I have 2 tats one of a rose on my breast, and a large fairy on my back, neither effected my lupus as such, and I have a lot of problems with infections, but always go to a registered tatooist, and of course check with Dr first, I checked the second time.If you are prone to getting cellulitous then you will properly be given antibiotics first.

Hi!!
I got my tatoo long time ago but about the time I got my Raynauds...I don?t think it is connected with anything (I am not diagnosed yet) but we are all different...

I also have a fairly large tattoo and then had two babies all before being dx ~~ For me, I don't think they are connected. So I plan to tattoo more ... :highfive:
Jem,
I have basically 2 tatoos which cover about a 7" square. The first one was done over 20 years ago, second done less than 6 months ago. I had the first one redone and then added more to it (Maybe that counts as 3). The add on was larger then the first which I call my second one. I had no problems with either one but the guy that went with me had a bad reaction, and he doesn't even have Lupus.
So there you go! Good luck with your decision.

 Ihave three tats that I got over 5 years ago and when I got them I never had any problems, but then again that was me. It is good advise to check with your doctor as they will be able to give you the pros and cons of tattooing. It is aways best to check.
And while tattoos are permenant, they can be very beautiful pieces of work for life. My all have meanings. I have a fish with four hearts on my left ankle. The fish represents me and the fact you have to swim thru life everyday. The four hearts represent my children. I have a butterfly in the middle of my back at the base of the neck. The butterfly represents of course the lupus and the fact that as with the butterfly we go thru so many changes in life and that each phase is beautiful. The third tattoo is on my right foot and is the symbol of the sign Scorpio since that is the sign I was born under. I would love to get another tattoo to cover up a nasty scar, but I am now hesitant since I have been having difficulties with my Lupus,so it will be a wait and see. Good luck with finding out and if you do get one, I wish you the best and hope you have no problems.

Hi, we had a post on the last week I think (wow, that word again, think) I have three, I got all of the after I was dx'ed with lupus. I didn't check with my doctor on any of them. One of them got infected and I had to go thru three rounds of antibiotics and about three or four touch ups.
Everyone told me that I shouldn't get any more but I did check with my PCP adn Rh and thay both thought they were cute and that it would be possible that it might trigger a flair but shouldn't. With the other two I didn't get infected or have any problems.
Now when the co-workers and mother said they wouldn't get any more just in case it did cause that. I went back out with my mom (64) and son (25) and we all got another one.
No problems but like everyone said you might want to check with your dr and of course check out the place that you are going to use.
Good luck and let us know what you get. I think they are so pretty and colorful. I went to get a butterfly because it fit with lupus of course, but when I got there I saw a cute little devil with a bright yellow forklift and diaper so it beat out the butterfly but when I got the others I got a blue (several shades) butterfly on my upper arm and a rose branch on my boob. The artist drew the roses and mixed colors so that they are a beautiful shade of magenta I guess is the closest. Not pink but not red either and a few green leaves. Now that one did bruise some where I bruise easy.
You might want to do a search on tattoo and see the last post.

Shoot, I looked at the post and I typed a forklift.....don't mind me. I meant a pitchfork. Well they are similar aren't they. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/oops.gif
Oh BTW when I said my mom went with me, we all three got them together. We do weird family things and she got hers when she was 63 i think that's right.
