Hi,

I have colored my hair for years now and before I colored my hair, I always had a perm. I have always had very thin, fine hair. This past summer I decided to get it permed right before I started on methotrexate and although it did "take", it only lasted about two months. That's something that's never happened before. In the past my hair always held a perm for several months. Anyway I made an appointment to have my hair permed again because I am tired of my limp and lifeless hair.

I am just wondering if anyone who is or has taken MTX - did the perm cause any problems with your hair? Did you lose any or did it become thinner or break off due to having the perm?

I'm not noticing much hair loss (I am knocking on wood) but I am noticing a change in the way my hair is growing. I know that sounds insane but it's true.

Thanks for any info you can give to me.

Dreamer Girl,

I am not sure about the perm, but I am curious like you. I am in the process of starting Rituxan and would be curious to know how different low dosage chemotherapy treatments affect perms and our hair.

Hope that someone can give us some insight. ;)

I have always had my hair permed since I was 16 now 42, also taken mtx in the past at 20mg a week and personally I haven't had any adverse effect with my hair. Sure I lose more hair when flaring but that is all. Now taking Aza and still no probs. Hope this helps.

Birdie thanks so much for the reply. I'm feeling much more confident about my appointment Friday (to have another perm). I know it's a little vain but I want to keep as much hair as possible and I would just kick myself if something I did caused me to lose it. :P

Specialk, I have only taken MTX, never Rituxan, but hopefully a perm wouldn't adversely affect your hair either. I'm glad Birdie was able to shed some light on this for us. Either that or I was going to be the guinea pig this Friday and let you know how it went. :D I know that now when I color my hair it doesn't always "take" the way it used to (before I started all the meds) so my hairstylist said she will watch over me more while I have the perm - hope it all goes well.

Oh and sorry it took me so long to thank you both for responding. I have a new tech toy and I am definitely NOT technologically savvy. I couldn't get onto the boards while using that thing so I had to wait until I could get to my computer.
