i've been reading a lot of messages, and most of you seem to go on about visiting the rhumey. i've never seen a rhumatologist, i've only ever visited a renal specialist. is this normal?????
my GP is not exactly up to date on lupus, so i wonder if im getting the best treatment. to be honest, i've only ever beet treated for my kidneys, although most of the pain i get is from my bones. i've told them about this, but they just talk a load of nonsence to me. should i demand to see a rhumey?

three cheers for the NHS.

HI Crispy.

I definitely would request seeing a rhemotologist if you can. That way you can have someone who knows more about lupus make sure you are getting the right treatment and can coordinate treating with your other doctors. It definitely could not hurt the situation.

Hope it works out. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flowers.gif

Hi! I agree with hellos - a Rheumy would be good, but do check around for one that specializes in Lupus. Not all Rheumy's do. I bet a call to your local hospital would give you a good start. Treating your kidney problems with a specialist is important too - I would not stop seeing that doc, just get another pair of eyes and ears on board. A Rheumy will be up to date on the latest treatments and research, and more apt to help you get into remission - our ultimate goal!

I see a renal specialist and a rheumatologist but now the kidney problems are under control I am mainly seeing the rheumatologist, with an occasional follow up appointment with the renal people. It has been confusing to work out who is doing what, but we seem to have it sorted now and I definately think the rheumatologist is the best person to help you with the other aspects of the illness although sometimes the treatment may end up being the same.
