View Full Version : stretch Marks or lesions
Hi Everyone
Mary is 15 and the steriods she is taking have created dreadful marks on her stomach and legs, being only 15 she is devastated. They look like stretch marks, though I believe the medical word is lesions. Her doctor told her they will never go and there is nothing available to make them a little better, So as you can imagine, depression is high at the mo.
Can anyone advise anything that could help, creams, makeup. absolutley anything is worth trying....
Yours

Hi Din
Awwwwwww poor Mary! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/aww.gif
Such a young age to go through this. You are a good mom to come on here and look for help for her.style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I don't know what to offer, but maybe tell her to keep her body properly moisturized. It might not help but it can't hurt and at least she will feel like she is doing something. Sometimes psychologically that helps!
I wish you and Mary the best! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flowers.gif
Hi Din
Some of the stretch marks may fade in time. In the meantime things like Vitamin E cream can sometimes help fade them a little.
Do you know if Mary is on any other medications besides Prednisone? With her kidney problems etc. she should also be on Immunosuppressants as a more long term treatment to control the disease.

Hi,
I was diagnosed at 16 and the steroids did the same to me - I hated it and got very depressed - being told they will never go away is heart breaking. I'm 27 now and they are still here regardless of how many products I have bought to try and get rid of them! I totally understand her position - but eventually - as corny and as uncovincing as it sounds - you begin to realise that they arent all that important.. that its just you who notices them that much! I still hate them, they still upset me and I would still try anything to reduce them - but in reality they dont go away, they just fade - its our own attitude that needs to change in order for us to move forward. I try not to let them get to me, and I dont cover up anymore - thats the only thing to do... live your life as it is, as best as you can. xxx

hi, my name is jennifer and i had....or still have, that problem. i was 16 when i found those strech marks and i kinda freaked out. i am now 18, but they are not as bad. i asked why i had them and the nurses and drs told me that it was because of the predinsone. the less prednisone i take the lighter the marks have gotten. nobody else seems to notice them but me. if you want, i think that cream helps, espacially with vitamine e, but i don't think that they will ever go away. its great that you came and asked for help. that cool. they are kinda a mental thing. you are as pretty as you feel. tell here to try not to let these little marks bother her and enjoy high school. it's a blast!! hope i helped style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
I was dx'd at 14 and had pretty bad stretch marks by the time I was 16. I used it all - Vitamin E, coverup creams, lots of lotion - not much helped except time. I'm 33 now, and they DO fade over time.
The other thing I'd like to say is that people have to be REALLY close to you to notice them - a friend says it's like not shaving your legs - if someone is close enough to notice, they're close enough to not care!
Please give Mary my best - if she ever wants to talk to someone who came through pediatric lupus in (relatively!) good shape, I'd be happy to chat or email.

Thank you all for your replys, my pc has been offline so it's only now I'm reading them.
She is on antisuppressents for her kidney problems. I'm not Marys mum I'm a friend, until Mary can get on line I'm trying to find all the advice, help and support that they need.
Because of the encouragement of this site Mary's mum kept up her battle to get her daughter reffered to a Lupus specialist and finally she has an appointment with a Mr Cruz in the new year.
Thank you all again.
I will be passing the advice regarding the stretch marks from you all to her.

Hello Din
Just to mention that Dr D D'Cruz is a super doctor, assuming it's the one at St Thomas's. Mary's parents have done well to get her the very best treatment available. I hope she'll soon be enjoying much better health.
I hop that they will soon be on line themselves.
Pass on our very best wishes please
Clare

Hi Din, im 21 and I have horrible stretch marks on my hips and thighs and even the bottom of my legs. One thing thats temporary but does help make them a little less noticeable is using fake tan. Other than that mine haven?t faded at all just got worse every year, I just kinda got used to it you know. Mary will realize that people wont stop on the street staring at her legs in shock, I know she will get over it in time because I did, just be sensitive and don?t force her to put on shorts if she doesn?t feel comfortable. It may even take a few years.

Has anyone tried that Merderma scar cream? I haven't, but keep seeing ads for it on Tv and in magazines. It says it can fade stretch marks along with other types of scarring, but I'm skeptical. Just wondering. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

Hi everyone... When I ws first diagnosed I put on 50lbs in 3 weeks due to the prednisone and got extremly bad stretch marks all over my body. the worst was my thighs, butt, lower back arms & even breasts. I did try everything and now after 8 years they are still there. I have to say that they did fade from the bright red/pink colour to slighty less noticable colour...but unfortunately they dont ever go away if they are bad they will always show. I know shes very upset right now but the good thing is that she WILL learn to live with them and even though they seem to be horrible now she'll adjust to them.
Ive now recently had a flare and was put back on a high dosage of prednisone and have developed a new section of stretch marks on my stomach..again..I hate them and they'r ugly but I know that over time I'll get over it.
I know that doesn offer much help..but just thought I'd let you know that shes not alone and she will get past this too.

i reccomend Vitamin E cream, or even the vitmains gel pills. but also to prevent anymore stretch marks use Cocoa Shea butter lotion, they are out in every store, even one that say "for stretch marks for pregnant women" i got horrible stretch marks on my stomach and ankles from the prednisone and the edema. and most definately they will fade away, the red will turn into a silvery color, but 80% less noticable. it's hard for her to go through that at such a young age
