Hi all.
This is the book that was referred to me by a chronic pain doctor that I will get and see how it is but thought you could read about it from this site I found to see if something that might interest you.
The name of it is Managine Pain before it Manages you. by Margaret Caudill.
I searched the book and found this article on it and seems interesting.

Hi Jude. I got the book last night and read a chapter of it. The chapters are small, easy to read and explains a lot. I looked through the book, there are workbook questions at the end of each chapter. The first chapter makes you list 3 goals to things to help your pain and I assume the next chapters help you do it.
The first chapter uses an example named "Paula" wouldn't ya know !!
It has a blank pain page that you can copy and suggests keeping tract of 3x a day the pain, etc that you have.
It seems very good so far and I am hopeful that I will learn to change my pain around, etc.

Hi Helloos and anyone else reading this post
I spent a lot of time at my Derm appointment yesterday talking about pain and how I could cope and manage it better.
The derm suggested I see a psychologist who deals with pain and chronic illness. She gave me the name of a psychologist who she has used and feels would be beneficial for me. I would love to do this but sure hate to spend the money and time for the appointment if there is a book that I can read and work through at home. What do you think of "Managing Pain Before It Manages You?" Was it helpful and would you recommend it?
I put a hold on it at the local library but won't get it for a couple of days. I also put a hold on 8 others that looked interesting. I am currently on Ultracet and still have a lot of pain. Derm is also going to talk to Rheum about changing pain medication.
The pain I am referring to is for leg ulcers and I can hardly walk they are soooooo painful. I go to wound care 3 times a week and TRY to relax and not fight the pain when the therapist works on them. I know breathing and relaxation techniques would help me greatly.
Hugs, Sarah

Hi Sarah.
I can only say that I am on Chapter 3-4 I think. It is very easy and yes, I believe it will be helpful. The thing is, you have to make time to read and do the exercises. It teaches you R&R which I had no clue what that was. It has many techniques and explains them to you and then you can try them. It makes it clear that you have to practice over and over for it to work. Defininetly get it. The pain doctor told me to read and they actually do classes with this book as a team. I think you will find it easy to read and understand. I am the type of person that has no time, wants things immediately, and doubts things can help. But, this book really seems like it will help. A lot.
I think I'll make sure to read it today. It has pages in the back that you can copy for yourself that you will need to record and do the exercises with. For instance, you have to keep a daily pain log. I still don't know why....I believe you find that out later on.....but daily you need to record and answer the questions.
Hope that helps.

Paula,
Thanks so much. I am looking forward to getting the book. I will let you know what I think of it. I am retired and so I should have time to work on it unless I am in too much pain!! lol We have a copy machine so I hope I won't have to buy the book.
I think that keeping track of pain might be beneficial. Maybe it is to check your progress of what you are learning?
I will let youknow if I find anyother good pain books. I only put holds on ones that are current.
Hugs, Sarah
