Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had a problem with their hair....?

My hair has got really thin lately and i have noticed alot of it in my hair brush?

Is hair loss a part of lupus or is it a side effect of pred?

thanks for taking the time to read this....

Love Gill

Hi Gill

I experienced allot of hairloss with my lupus, but it has slowed down greatly since being on plaquenil,
prednisone also slowed my hairloss down. But we are all different, so it could be your lupus or the
prednisone. Good luck with finding the answers.

Take Care

I lost about 50% of my hair about 2 months after being very ill. It fell out everywhere! Fortunately it has started to grow back although I do look like a bit like a lion with a mane as it it is thick at the roots and thin at the ends! It was pretty horrible and I was considering just shaving the whole lot off at one point and making a statement about being bald but couldn't quite bring myself to do it! My doctor told me it often happens when we are ill as the normal cycle of hair growth and loss gets disrupted so it all falls out at once! I hope yours settles down.

yea i lost about 70% of my hair, but mine was due to iniially being put on the meds, and not the meds are helping with hair growth. but also cos i was ridiculosly low on iron.
its hard loosing hair isnt it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/umm.gif

My hair goes through phases of falling out and being brittle I thought it was caused by medication but my rheumatologist told me it is one of the many symptoms this disease has

Hair Loss with Lupus is fairly common. Some doctors call this "Lupus Hair " it is at times a thing that some doctors will look at when concidering a diagnoses for Lupus.
One Medical School Clinic we went to for awhile always made sure they pointed this out to any of the students who were in the area that day.
In addition to this many drugs that are used to treat Lupus can also have a side effect of making hair come out. This can be a fairly normal side effect of the medicines.
Best things to do is to mention it to your doctor and let him or her take a look and try to determine the cause.
Good chace that they may need to ask you a few other questions and maybe run a test or two to help determine this.
If it is Lupus Hair then sometime a derm can help with this so it is less. The treatment can very from a cream that they have you rub in at night if you have dry scally patches or steriod injections in the scalp. Warning this is painful and should be concidered prior to doing it.

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/coffee.gif Good Morning!!

My hairloss has slowed down quite a bit since going to Plaquinel. There for a while I was shedding something awful and it was starting to look like I had mange! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif I rarely take Prednisone, but when I have I can honestly say that I didn't notice hair loss so I cannot say.

To help hide the hair loss, I bought and use on a regular basis hair extensions, etc. I got mine from the local beauty supply shop and various discount stores. My hair is just long enough that I can pull it back, which hides some of the bald spots and add my hair thingys (as my kids call them) and it appears to everyone that I have a nice full head of hair......... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hehe.gif It is just a thought for you. Good luck style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flowers.gif

The hair loss seems to be part of Lupus. When I flare it is the worst. It always grew back when I got stabilzed though. This time it got so thin it was breaking off about halfway. I ended up with it thicker on the top and see through on the bottom. Plus my natually straight hair started to curl. I couldn't stand it and cut it off. Now I just wash and a quick blow dry. I am not near as exhausted as I was before after washing my hair.
Take care,
Lazylegs

now im not sure if everyone knows about Biotin, but for people with hair loss (like i was on the cytoxan) i took it after i was done with the treatments, and i'm glad i did. months after the treatment i lost every single hair, but since i was taking the biotin, new hair was coming back, quickly. (not to mention more curlier and thicker then before) but i highly reccomend it. but please, if you take my advice to though, PLEASE ask your doctor FIRST!!

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif Hi gill
I have been suffering with hair loss and also developed a small bald patch. My doctor has given me elocon scalp application which seems to be working. Try asking your doctor for it. I hope this is helpful to you.

Best Regards Chris
