View Full Version : face moisurizer and sunscreen needed

The doc said that a sumblock of 15 just doesn't seem to be enough and wants me to wear a sunblock 45. Everything I have tried has either made my face burn and my butterfly rash more irriable or caused my eyes to burn. (that would be from the fumes, I did not place the lotion too close to my eyes). Does anyone have a favorite brand. Or at least have one they would reccommend.
Thanks,
Sherry

Hi Sherry
I hadn't realised you are still in Egypt.
How about asking for samples from Fallene @
http://www.totalblock.com/
The most likely to be tolerable of the sun block agents are those with zinc oxide and titanium oxide microparticles. I think that both of these block UVA and UVB, but not 100% sure. You need a "broad spectrum ". In the UK the UVA blockers have four stars on the package.
Also those designed for babies and children like BananaBoat.
I have found that many shops will take back any product that isn't suitable, or write to the manufacturers.
I prefer to use a moisturiser or nourishing type cream at night - the gel forms of block are the only ones that tend to be drying in my experience
I haven't seen any moisturizers with more than 30SPF.
Good luck and Take Care

HI Clare
Thanks for the reply. Actually I am not in Egypt anymore. I am back in Georgia. I simply forgot to change the little whatzamacallit at the bottom of my posts. I am now getting much better care here, but am in a flare (minor one thank goodness) that just won't quit. The malar rash will not go away. I am actually getting a lot less sun. But the doc told me to up the sunscreen. I'll try your suggestions, I've been using the baby sunscreens but they are so greasy they make my face feel awful. Maybe a different brand will work.
Thanks,
Sherry

Oh I see about the "signature" style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
I'm sorry about the flare. I have found it trial and error with the sunscreens. I know what you mean about the greasiness. I have refreshed my memory about sunblocks and screens the zinc and titanium do block both UVA and UVB and Parsol, uvabenzone, is a chemical block.
The gel type isn't greasy but can be drying
Remember that UVA comes through all the time regardless of cloud cover and it's reckoned that some people react to that as well as to UVB
There's a thread under treatments UVA1 therapy Dr McGraw all about sun blocks, a lot of theory, but some useful information
I hope you're feeling better very soon

Hi Sherry,
I am new to this forum. I was diagosed with DLE lat year. I have had problems finding facial creams with high factors myself, and previous ones I've tried have all made my eyes water... even those for sensitive skin. The one I use now, however, is great, and causes no irritation or watery eyes. I don't know how difficult it would be for you to get hold of it, but it's a Boots one. I live in the UK. I know they have an online site. The brand is Boots Soltan, Facial Sun Defence Cream... 5 star UVA rating... factor 30. It does say it enhances UVA and UVB protection, and contains titanium dioxide. It is non-greasy too. I don't know if this is the best one for use with DLE or SLE, as I'm new to all this.

Babs

Hi there
just wanted to add my bit too. I have tried alsorts too, the doctor prescribed factor 50 E45 sunblock which is really thick and greasy, not bad on arms and things but horrid on the face. I found another smaller tube for my face which is fantastic, factor 50 by simple, great for sunsensitive skins and is really light and does exactly what you want it to do. I have not had my rash since I found this cream.
Good luck

I have found that if I moisturize really well with my normal facial moisturizer (I suggest L'oreal or estee lauder for really sensitive skin) before I put on the sunscreen that it minimizes any irritation that the sunscreen would normally cause when put on alone. I'm not sure why this is the case but it does work for me.
Good luck. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif
