Hi everyone, don't know if you remember me but I floated around some of these discussion boards a little while ago, and have been a bit too busy to keep ya'll updated...sorry! Well, the latest news is that I went to see my doc a week ago, and my blood and urine results came back so great that she decided to take me off Prednisone (I was on a low dosage) and reduce my Cellcept dosage in half! Very happy, my mom is ecstatic because she always worries about the side effects of the medicine. I'm just happy in my own way because I don't have to wake up at 7 AM every other day to take Pred. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif Hehe, just kidding!
Anyway, as you all know, spring and summer is coming up...
sorry if this is such a trivial question compared to everyone who is facing much harder difficulties, but I was wondering if there's any way that us lupus patients can get tan. Obviously sun is out of the question, and for almost the same reasons, I shouldn't visit tanning beds either. But are artificial tanning sprays or tanning lotions okay, or do they have bad chemicals in them? I'd ask my doctor but I don't see her again until June (another good thing...pushed back visiting times!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/goodvibes.gif) and my pasty pale legs will not be any better by then. If any of you have had any experience with fake tans, please recommend brands and give advice (how to apply, how often, should I even do it? are they fake looking? Any risk at all to the illness? etc)! Thanks!
I hope you all are doing well and feeling better!

Hi Happy
There are many good sunless self tanning products on the market, and many of us here have used them. So if your not allergic I don't see any reason not to use them. I have used Netrugena {sp} and others, they are easy to apply, but you may have to experiment with them, as some will turn your skin orange. Good Luck style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif

Hey! Thanks for the replies!
"Sunless tanning lotion"...how do I know if they are sunless? Is it part of the description, or is there a specific ingredient I should look for?
Is it bad to use tanning lotions that aren't sunless? For instance, I've heard so many good things about Jergens Natural Glow, but the product doesn't say sunless, so I don't know if I should buy it or not.

Hi,
I am glad you have brought this up, this will be my first 'confirmed Lupus' summer! And I am really worrying. I am extremely photosensitive and wearing SPF 50+, and I am also losing all my freckles and any tan style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/aww.gif Like you said, I realise this is such a minor thing compared to being ill, but it really doesn't help the depression and moral stakes?
Is it best to put fake tan on at night so it works etc then wash off in the morning and on with the sunblock or what? I'm always feeling sticky and greasy with all these sun blocks style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif and today I've got a sore red nose thats burnt, I am sure, just cos I blew my nose after putting on sunblock and didn't reapply it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hide.gif
I used to use fake tans that work in a few hours with no sun, they didn't say no sun just self-tan I thnk?

Hey Everyone,
Last summer was my first year with lupus and to be concerned of the sun. In the spring I figured I would just use a little sunless tanning lotion so I am not a ghost on the beach!!
RIGHT before I had gone out and bought some, it seems there was a program on the news about how bad these sunless lotions are. They are filled with nothing but chemicals(which I guess makes sence being they die our skin temp.)... anyways it really turned me off of using them.
I am going to do a search on google.com to see if I can find anything so I can give you actual facts.
I know we can't run away from all things that aren't 100% natural BUT being lupus in some/alot of cases is skin related sometimes I think its better to be preventative style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif
I have very pale skin and never have been one to be out in the sun so it's not like I used to tan all day, BUT I did use to get some color.
If we look on the positive side being out in direct sunlight isn't all that healthy for anyone anyways so we just will be wrinkle free/less wrinkles as we age style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/goodvibes.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/goodvibes.gif

Hi Heather
This new board is far from user friendly I am sorry to say.
To add to a thread please use the [+ADDREPLY] function at the bottom right of the page to the left of the [NEWTOPIC] function.
By using the ["REPLY] the whole of the previous post is quoted which is unnecessary. If you wish to reply to one particular post, just name who you are talking to.
I will delete the above when I see your reply style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Hi there,
Sun and tanning is always an interesting topic and one I like to join in with as it reminds me that the UK summer will be with us soon!!!
I use fake tan (Clarins) and it is great and gives me tonnes of confidence, usually much needed.
As for sun protection I use a product called Ultra Sun - which you put on first thing in the morning and it works all day - I love it as dont have to be greasy all day. I am also very careful in the sun and stay covered up - but this is by far the best product I have ever used. As a test I used it on my husband last year in France where we hired a boat - he was on deck all day with no top on and came home as pale as when he left!!!! Ultra Sun is also available on prescription in the UK. www.ultrasun.co.uk is the web address and they are very helpful.
Just some helpful advice from my experiences!

Hi Mrs H, thanks so much for your input! Ultra Sun sounds great. I currently use Coppertone sunscreen at SPF 30, and my parents tell me to reapply about every 4-8 hours. I would love to get a sunscreen that lasts all day so I don't need to reapply. But I haven't seen Ultra Sun in any stores around here...maybe it's only available in the UK? Anyway, what SPF do you have yours in and what do you suggest? I've heard that if an SPF is too high, it doesn't work. Is this true?
And does anyone else know if there's a sunscreen that lasts all day, no reapplication needed? I would love that! I would like something non-greasy, too (don't we all)...I hate having sunscreen on all day.
Thanks!

Hi,
I used the Jergan's Natural Glow last summer and thought it was very natural...never orange. I am very fair, so I used the lightest one. It didn't give me a tan, but it did give me the color I was looking for. Remember , you still have to use sunscreen! Good Luck!
