Hi all just thought i would ask a few questions, I have been getting treatment for M.S for past 10 years, But problems started when i had my daughter 13 years ago,Although i had raynauds when i was in my teens.
The tests i have had are not showing anything except SMA ?POSATIVE, A few years back i had lots of tests as i had optic disc swelling(druson). I also had delayed pupils also small dilated pupils which don't react to light i need to wear sunglasses all year and also at night if i'm going out in my hubbys car due to headlights hurting my eyes, I had a lumber puncture which showed oligoclonal bands,My mri showed empty sella syndrome,I also had evoked potentials done that showed delays P100 bilaterally,I also had pressure in my head 36 and add a lumber drain put in my back for 48 hours also wires into my scalp to keep the measurements from my brain, the doctors have also put in report that autoantibodies show changes with vasculitic disorder (meaning what ) This is all so confusing, I also have sjogrens,And my daughters 1 age 20 the other age 13 have raynauds doctors have said could be related to my illness both started age 12-13, My eldest daughter has vitamin b12 deficancey diagnoised 2 years ago but think she has had this longer. She needs injections every 2 month for life and also asprin,Anybody have these tests mainly the SMA come back posative my liver tests are negative.
well any help would be great thanx

I want to start out by saying that I am not an expert on lab tests, but from what I've read I think the SMA (anti-Smith-antibody) test is one that is specific for lupus. I'm assuming that is the test you are abbreviating, but there are many tests and I could be wrong. You might want to write out the whole name of the test so that others might be able to give a more accurate answer.
It is possible to have more than one autoimmune disorder, so you may be headed for treatment that will help some of your symptoms that haven't been under control to date.
I wish you well!

There's also the anti Smooth Muscle Test. Why not ask your doctor ? There may even be other tests with this sort of abbreviation. You could check it on the test sites mentioned on the pinned notice at the top of this section
Check that you have been tested for anti phospholipid antibodies that's lupus anti coagulant and anti cardiolipins. These antibodies can cause MS like symptoms.
Cheers

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/foryou.gif Hi just to say the test is posative smooth muscle antibodies but my serum urea and electrolytes also liver function test are all ok, I have been on lots of tablets also IV STEROIDS, prednislone, trimorhoprim for kidney infection.tegratol for nueralgia, vagifem for dryness in virgina, zoton for digestive problems the list goes on and on sick off taking them as i see it if doctors keep saying its part of your illness which one M.S or Lupus. If they don't know why treat it. These IV STEROIDS are the worse 5 day course and put on nearly 2 stone, You don't treat someone for cancer if your not sure and put them through the side affects of the tablets etc. I am just a little worried as all meds go through your kidneys and i only have the one.
Thankyou for any help.

Hi Susan,
If its Smooth Muscle Antibody then thats entirely different to anti-smith antibody which is quite specific for Lupus.
I would ask your doctors what this test result means in YOUR case as they know all the facts about your case and that needs to be considered before labelling someone just because they have a positive antibody test.
You mentioned you have a Sjogrens diagnosis, Primary Biliary Cirrhosis which is an autoimmune liver disease sometimes found in Sjogrens and has positive Smooth Muscle antibodies. Other things that can cause these antibodies are autoimmune hepatitis and even things like Epstein Barr Virus and Cytomegalovirus.
SMOOTH MUSCLE ANTIBODIES:
From the Royal Australasian Pathology college site:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>A titre of >160 in adults or >40 in children occurs in a proportion of patients with autoimmune hepatitis.
Lower titres are relatively non-specific and may be found in viral infections (eg, infectious mononucleosis, viral hepatitis) and in neoplasia.

From Family Practice Notebook site:
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Normal
Negative
Positive
Titer >1:80
Chronic active hepatitis
Titer <1:80
Primary biliary Cirrhosis
Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)
Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Hope this helps, your docs have some answers to give you.
love

Hi Susan,
I'm sorry you have so much going on health-wise. I think you have some good leads with the posts above. I am wondering if you have ONE doctor to help you put all of these results together and come up with a treatment plan. I think part of the problem a lot of us run into is that we have different specialists with different knowledge running different tests and coming up w/different conclusions. This is all very confusing.
I am finding this to be a problem myself and have attempted to find an internist to coordinate my care and put it all together. The last one I found focused on MS for a solid year, sending me here and there. Anything I suggested she poo-pooed. Just a simple blood test, unless it was her idea it was not a good one. I have a new internist. I have seen him once - last week. I told him that I was a complicated case and that I needed a doctor specificallly to work w/me and my specialists to come to the best medical conclusions possible, taking all things into consideration. Everybody is all over the place. The left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. I'm giving him 6 months.
I don't know how things work in the UK, but it seems like you must be seeing many different specialists. Do you have a doc to put it all together?

Hi hurley,Yes my main doctor is my nurologist he keeps sending me to all the other doctors,Although 1 was knocked off the list 4 years ago that was my gynocologist thats because i ended up with hysterectomy,I kept having abnormal smears, also very large fibroids,But i was reading on the net yesterday autoimmune diseases can cause abnormal smears, My GENERAL PRACTITIONER OR FAMILY DOCTOR AS WE CALL THEM HERE is here all the time but i get a bit fed up as when i go about anything all he seems to say is "WELL I THINK ITS RELATED TO YOUR ILLNESS?" which one i would like to know, How will he know its related if he doesn't realy know which it is.
The same for my daughters illness both started at 13 with raynauds,my eldest is 20 now and she also has perniciouse anemia and needs b12 injections every 2 month but my G.P said we think its related to your illness,Also my father who passed away 4 years ago with brainstem stroke had the same symptoms as me but was also not able to get diagnoised with any illness properly but yet was paralised for 10 years before he had the last stroke. So i am a little worried as also my grandad died the same way. My youngest daughter with raynauds is 13 now and has had been diagnoised with raynauds also but she is also epileptic,I am going to mention this to my nuero when i go i think genetics should be looking into the illness. As they have with my family due to kidney problems.
Well thankyou for your post if you have anymore info please post
