I have noticed that my teeth are getting yellow. I don't know why perhaps the ailments or the meds.

I have checked out some whitening toothpaste and other products.

Does anyone use any whitening whatever to get their teeth whiter and do you think it isn't good to use if you have Lupus because of the light chemical in them?

Glad to hear inputs.

I wish I could afford the dentist and get them whitened. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

I am having this problem!!! Over last few years my teeth are turning yellow!! This is frustrating! My son even committed on it.I brush at least three times a day and it doesn't do abit of good. They also feel dirty all of the time. My RHematologist said that it indeed is because of meds style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/crying.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sick.gif She said that it would be safe to use over the counter whiteners. I have even thought about having my dentist whiten them. The only reason I have not done either as of yet is because my teeth have become so sensitive!!(Rhemy says do to meds also) I am scared this will make them worse. If you find a solution, please let us know. THANKS!!

Dentist told my daughter it's ok to use the
strips but make sure not to get them on the
gums.
just be careful, and it should be ok.

good luck,
hope it works for you

I was told not to use whitener, it would make my teeth more weak, and also if you have fillings it will not change the colour of the fillings..
you should for sure ask ur dentist style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

i have the same problem. I feel embarrassed about it. I asked my dentist but the whitening he recommended me costs 200pounds! Ridiculous!

I have also noticed my teeth looking yellow but didn't think of any connection, thought I was perhaps just drinking too much coffee! What meds are you attributing this to?

I have tried colgate whitening toothpaste but as far haven't really seen any difference..

I too tried that and find no difference.

I am not sure what meds contributes to it, if any.

Interested to hear though.

Hello Paula,

My dentist told me in was a combination of the prednisone and plaquinil, i have tried the crest white stripes and they worked great for the first 3 or 4 days then my eye teeth became very sensitive so i had to discontinue. I am now going to try the white light type of whittening. I will let you know how that goes. My teeth aren't very bad when i go to get them cleaned they look great but can only do that every 9 months so 3 months after cleaning back to looking terrible. If this white light doesn't work I guess I have to deal with my teeth they are pretty strong and healthy so I guess that is what matters. Another thing is my dentist also told me that when your teeth are slightly yellow the cleaning products wil work but if they have a greyish tint that usually occurs from meds the cleaning produsts probably will not work. But I am going to try.

I haven't read about lupus meds causing tooth discolouration but I have been told that shortage of saliva changes the colour of teeth, how long term I don't know. When my dentists were choosing shades for crowns they wait until normal saliva is restored.
Otherwise I think it might be aging. Ask your rheumatologist's advice.

Cheers

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif Hi i have very sensitive teeth and probs with mouth ulcers, i use sensodyne extra whitening it definately helps with sensitivity and i have noticed a difference in the colour of my teeth although i doubt they will ever be white they are whiter. I also found beverly hills whitening toothpaste for sensitive teeth to be good too.

I have the same problem. It was worse when I was on Mepacrin. I asked my dentist about whitening, but she would not do it because I have Lupus and wasn't sure of the reaction. I put it down to my age now! But I still am very conscious when I smile! Still I don't have to look at them and at least they are my own!

While medications can play a role in our teeth turning a not so lovely white, so can what you drink and eat. Sodas, tea, coffee, smoking can all be very hard on your teeth and cause them to discolor. There have been many "rememdies" placed on the market, but you should be wary of them. The bleaching agents can change the color of exisiting, crowns, veneers, or fillings. They can also weaken the tooth and cause them to become very sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages. It is best to talk to your dentist prior to starting to use any of these products to see what he/she may or may not advise. Another thing to watch for is when chosing a toothpaste is the sugar content. Most toothpastes have sugar in them, it just maynot come right out and say............. sugar ..................... The on ly one that I have found that does not have sugar is Arm & Hammer baking soda toothpaste.
