Hi All,

I read a copy of my pulmonologist report and I'm pissed!

My chest xray was abnormal with hyperinflation of my lungs and interstitial markings on two places in my left lung.

Anyway, according to the doc's report, I'm imagining it! He thinks I'm having anxiety attacks and that's why I get short of breath on exertion! I can't even go up a flight of stairs without huffing and puffing! I'm not having anxiety. I guess I made the mistake of telling him that I take the smallest dose of prozac. I originally started taking it to help me sleep better, but it has also help with PMS. Anyway, I'm the most relaxed, laid back person in my whole family. I've actually got a reputation for not letting things get to me! I do realize that anxiety is a real condition, but I don't feel that way! If it wasn't for feeling like poo all the time, I would be the happiest person I know!!

I'm to the point with these doctors that I feel like just saying to h*ll with it and not going back to any of them!!! I just feel like crying!! I'm just so sick and tired of doctors!

Thanks for letting me vent...I know you all would understand!

I can't understand why he would say that your test was normal. What doc report said normal? Perhaps that doc didn't get the report of the xray?

I guess it depends on how that doctor viewed it and how bad the results were. I always knew that hyperinflation could be from asthma, emphesina? (did not spell it right) or from medicines. Of course there are problem other reasons as well and only the doc would know that one. As for the other issue I was told that was scarring, perhaps from an infection and autoimmunde disease can cause too. This is only through my family that I know this one, but not through myself and of course I am not in the medical profession so I would come right out and ask the doctor what it all means. Tell them you have it and maybe go see a pulmonary doctor.

Hi Gayle

I would phone that doctor and ask if he saw your x-ray, I get shortnes of breath from asthma and pluerisy. I can understand you not wanting to go back to any doctors, it gets so frustrating. I've been there as many others here have, but keep going until you get some decent answers. Good luck style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/clover.gif

Hi,

Actually, that was the pulmonologist that said that. He did see the xray and also a copy of the report. He said that the radiologist were just wrong and that he 'wasn't impressed' with the xray. What makes me more concerned also, is the fact that in the report he mentioned things that were "negative" that he didn't even check. Such as, he said that my glands weren't swollen (which they are). He didn't even check them. He said that my ears, nose and throat were normal, but he didn't even check that either. Said my abdominal exam was normal; didn't check that. Said that I didn't have any rashes, I do, but he didn't ask about that either. Basically, he said he did alot of different things, that he didn't even do. He also said that my breathing problems were "non-lupus related". How does he know??

The only thing I actually give him credit for is that he gave me a script for my low blood pressure. First time ever! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif

Hi Gayle.

I think after hearing all of that, I would ask to get a referral to another pulmo doctor and have them review everything and if they ask why, tell them. This doctor says all this and never even examined you.

You obviously did not get a thorough exam and I would say that is inconclusive to what he says.

Ask for a second opinion, after all it is your lungs we are talking about here.

Some docs are just hmmmmmmm - out there.

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif Hi Gayle, I would be more than upset too. Plenty. I would ask to have another appt with your dr. a.s.a.p. and call him to the carpet, so to speek. Not rudely, byt come atraight out and tell him that you have seen the written report of you chest x-rays, and that you think that he is playing it down, as being no of much importance, and that , that is not allright with you. Ask him "now would you please go over these reports with me, word for word, so that I can understand them. And just so that he knows just how serious you really are, and how intelligent you are, have a pad of paper on your lap and a pen, and write down what he says, that way he will be carefull in choosing his words. You have the right to be treated with more respect than you are getting. If after that, you are still not satisfied, then I would find myself another dr.
Please let us know.

Be well and keep posting. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif

Natascha,

OMG I can't believe it! That is what my doc said too...Hyperventilation syndrome!!!!! That's what his diagnosis was. I got so ticked because when I read up on it, it said that it was because of anxiety! I do not have anxiety. My sister does, so I know what it does to you. I know I don't have it! I think that maybe because they don't know what it is (for me) or don't believe that you have MVP, their arrogant-know-it-all attitude comes into play and they just come up with that as a diagnosis, so that way they can blame us for how we feel!

Wow....I think I have finally figured out doctors! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rotfl.gif

I'll make a deal with you....we'll both get ourselves taken care of and not give up!

Take care,

Gayle

p.s. thanks everyone for your understanding, compassion and advice...it helps more than you know!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/goodvibes.gif

Gayle & Natascha,

Can I join your club too? My gp (whom I am normally very pleased with) really pssssssssd me off too. I ended up in the ER Monday night with severe abdominal pain , er doc said probably from the 3 bleeding ulcers I have. They did labs on me also and my hemocrit levels were very low , lower than they were when my gp called me in to get an iron shot and sent me for a EGD to see if I was bleeding internally. Anyway, the er doc told me to follow up with my GP first thing Tuesday morning and to have him check my hemocrit again and that if it was any lower than Monday night he recommended my GP hospitalize me to find out where I'm loosing the blood because it wasnt coming from my ulcers. At least not enough to make that big of a drop. I called the GP first thing Tuesday morning and told the receptionist what the ER doc said and she said sorry cant get you in til at least the 15th but she would talk to my GP and he will call me. He never did so I called back again, still never called me, so I called again this morning and guess what, he's out of the office for 2 days! Guess he's really worried about me hu? Ended up having the receptionist "squeeze" me in on Friday. Vent, vent, vent.

The Dr. I saw was such a JERK, that I refuse to go back and see him!!! Wish me luck that I will come across one that is atleast half decent and will hear me out and treat me for my symptoms!!! I wish you all the best with your next appointment!!! Let us know how it goes!!! Take Care & All the Best!!!

Welcome aboard Lillie! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hugbetter.gif

I can sympathize!

What a crock! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hissy1.gif They couldn't get you in before Friday! With something that important, they should have you come in right away! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hissy1.gif Maybe the receptionist didn't give the doc the message. I've had docs in the past that I liked, but their staff wasn't so great. Since you normally like this doctor, maybe it's the receptionist fault. You should probably mention it to him when you see him Friday.

Good luck tomorrow with the appt. Let us know what they tell you.

Gayle

I've been reading about hyperventilation and it is actually a common symptom of MVP. It is true 50-60% of patients with panic/anxiety attacks have a hyperventilation syndrome, but only 25% of people with hyperventilation symdrome have panic/anxiety disorders.

I would get a second opinion on that. Lupus does affect the lungs and you could be hyperventilating as a reflexive response to poor lung function.

In addition, hyperventilation can give you the feeling like you are suffocating. You may have neurological symptoms and chest pain as well. It can be insidious and chronic. The underlying cause needs to be treated to correct the problem.

You need the sign my wife wanted to get for me when I was diagnosed. The sign I would wear would say
"I TOLD YOU I WAS SICK!"
