Does anybody happen to have a picture of a lupus mouth sore, or are all mouth sores the same?
Hi,
Its hard sometimes to find a good pic on the net. This one is closest to what mine look like at times. I mainly get them on the roof of my mouth, although I do get them elsewhere in my mouth.
Yes there are different sorts of mouth sores inside the mouth I guess.

There seems to be some professional disagreement about what are 'lupus' mouth sores and what are not.
I have read that some doctors only consider the painless roof of the mouth ulcers that last more than 2 weeks are from Lupus. Others write about it being possible to biopsy the ulcers to work out if they are from the lupus.
From what I understand, these opinions are a bit too restrictive. Dr Wallace writes in "The Lupus Book" that the ulcers can be anywhere and can be painful or painless. I've read elsewhere that lupus mouth sores are the same as canker sores/ common mouth ulcers, just caused by the lupus rather than another cause (most 'normal'people that get ulcers get them from trauma to the mouth like biting a cheek). My own rheumatologist belives the ulcers can be anywhere in the mouth too.
Mine look like the picture Lily found too, and can be anywhere in my mouth including but not restricted to hard and soft palate. Talking to non-lupies I've never had a non-lupie say that they get them on the roof of the mouth, so maybe it is significant - there is certainly some debate about that anyway style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ermm.gif
There are other causes of a sore mouth, and these should be identified and treated appropriately,
eg Thrush (Candida), herpes, mouth cancer, tooth abscese etc. If you have a new symptom, a good rule of thumb is to get it checked out.
Tips for soothing painful ulcers:
Rinse (don't swallow) in Milk of Magnesia
Steroid paste called orobase in UK (available without prescrition from a pharmacy). Can't be used long term.
Mild antiseptic mouthwash
Rinsing in Salty water
Toothpaste without soduim laurel sulpfate in it
Baby teething gel with lidocaine/xylocaine in it eg bongella
My favorites are the first too - experiement to find what works for you

I showed my rhuemie a really huge, painful canker sore that I had in the inside of my cheek. It looked like a volcano in my mouth and he said that it was a "lupus sore". I got another one later in the other cheek and then a few smaller ones on my tongue (not all at the same time), but this was when I was flaring. I don't know if the prednisone has helped me, but i haven't had any in several weeks. I always thought the sores were supposed to be painless, but apparently canker sores are associated with immune problems or something.

DeniseH,
I get very painful mouth sores, I always called them "canker sores". I asked my rheumy (actually the Nurse Practitioner) and she told me to use Lysine. You can get it at any Nutrition store or probably any drug store. Take it when you have the sores and it really does help.
I also use Camphophenique (not sure where you live and if you have this or not). It burns like crazy, style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tantrum.gif but it does help to get rid of the sore quicker. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Hope this helps!!
God Bless and take care.
