confused over xray results

I recently was sent for xrays by my rhuemmy because my hip and ankle were especially painful (more than my other joints) Both xrays showed nothing. I don't understand this, my hip is so bad sometimes, It gives way on me when I walk and the pain is quite severe. Am I just going crazy????? I also limp alot on my ankle especially when walking the dog in the morning but still nothing on xray. Can anyone give me any advice? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/highfive.gif

Hi Chloe,

There are several possibilities. It could be soft tissue thats inflamed, like muscles, tendons or ligaments, even bursa. If so it wont show on an x-ray to my knowledge. I get bursitis in my hip and knee and it hurts like )$%*#! but if my doc was to x-ray it nothing would show up. He has diagnosed it by examination. The bursa is the cushion that helps joints glide as they work- mine gets inflamed.

Lupus arthralgia as opposed to arthritis often wont show any damage to the joints. Lupus inflames the joint but rarely causes any visible damage that shows up on x-ray, you might get a different scenario though if an MRI was taken though. Of course some here have another form of arthritis too so you will read sometimes how people show damage in one or more joints on x-ray. This is especially true of Rheumatoid Arthritis and things like Osteoarthritis and probably other forms too.

There are lots of reasons why u got that, and of course i do wit agree with Lily that if it is sumthng that has got to do with the joints of course it wont show up on the x ray results... I once had that pain on the ankles, and i was just wonderin if its swollen or something lyk that, coz mine was, before i was hopsitalzed, it hurt so bad i couldnt walk... i hope its nothing serious lyk that, just let us know, and keep posting... i hope u get better! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hugbetter.gif
