Hello All. I have checked prior posts on this same topic but was hoping for a little more information for those of you out there that have had a scalp biopsy. I am losing hair at the front on my scalp, almost like a receding hair line, but not. (Theres no history of this in my family.) I have been told I would probably benefit from a scalp biopsy. Does this hurt? How long of a procedure is this? I have heard they shave a little bit of the area... once its done how noticeable is it??

Thanks for the help!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif

Hi,

I had a scalp biopsy before I was diagnosed, at the time the specialist who performed the biopsy was not thinking that my hair loss was related to another problem.
The scalp biopsy itself was not painful, the area was numbed using a local and it didn't take that long. I don't remember if the area was shaved, if it was it wasn't much because I do remember it wasn't noticable unless you were looking for it. I came home after and went to watch a football game. It may have felt a little odd but nothing really painful. The doc took my scalp sample from an area that had a good amount of hair so that may be another reason that it wasn't noticable.

Good Luck and Take Care,

Amy

Thanks for the reply Amy!! Were they able to diagnose you with that biopsy?

Well the doc that performed the biopsy wasn't even thinking along the lines of lupus or anything he was thinking more along the lines of some genetic reason for hair loss or something wrong with my scalp. However, before the scalp biopsy results came back I had been taken to B.C. Childrens and had tests done there that lead to my being diagnosed with lupus.
