Hi Sue
that's fantastic honey....well done......I did the same thing in October 2004....after finishing 18 months at the physio dept at the hospital they referred me to my local Total Fitness Gym and I haven't looked back since.
When I joined up I still had to use two sticks and could only use the hydrotherapy pool but after a few weeks felt strong enought to attend the Aqua Mobility class. I did that for 6 months then thought I would be able to manage the Aqua Aerobics class and 18 months later I go to Aqua three times a week, attend the stretch mobilty, pilates and core stability classes. My stick only comes out if I have a really bad day and my balance and muscle tone have all improved.
Oh yeh!!!! and in the last 18months I have lost 64 pound............. that's 4? stone so I am well chuffed I went to Weight Watchers once a week, that, together with the exercise shifted the weigh I had gained with steroids. I was also able to do the London Bridge walk last September for Hughes Syndrome....something I never would of been able to do without training on the treadmill in the gym.
Going to the gym was the best move I ever made and the bonus is that socially I have many more friends from the gym and Weight Watchers and I got my confidence back.
I wish you loads of luck........and you can do anything once you have set your mind to do it.
To make sure I went I used to treat every visit to the gym like a physio appointment........that way I would have to go even if I didn't feel up to it.....I soon got to like it that much that I don't like to miss unless I am really ill.
Keep us informed how you get on xxxxxx style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ok.gif hazel

Hazel, many congratulations on your remarkable achievements ! I remember what a terrible state you were in not so very long ago. It is quite wonderful to hear how well you are doing now.
Isn't there another walk coming up ?
Many hugs for both of you

Hi Clare...thanks honey
Yes their is another walk coming up on 3rd September this year but I can only stay in London for the walk or for the HSF Patients Forum that follows a couple of days later as the whole week is for Hughes Syndrome Foundation.
I would really like to go to the Patients Forum as well as doing the walk as Dr Hughes, Khasmata and D'Cruz give a talk. I'll only be able to do one of them as my husband has to take time off work although we can stay at my sons flat in London so at least the hotel cost wouldn't be an issue this time.
I am waiting for another couple of weeks till I see my local rheumie again then will decide after that. I did end up in hosptial for a week after the last walk but they found a I had a stomach virus called campylobacter although my rheumie still thinks that the walk contributed to the lupus flare.
I have to decide what to do and maybe if I decide against doing the walk to go to the forum and I am sure there will be plenty of others doing the walk that I can sponsor if I decide not to walk.
It felt like such an achievement and something I wouldn't of thought I would ever of been able to do in the dark days of being in the wheelchair and of course I had some wonderful support off friends including yourself. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Thanx.gif
Catch you in chat soon I hope xxxxx hazel style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif

We'll keep in touch about the Hughes Syndrome Week events. I will definitely try to make at least one of those two events and will post separately about it nearer the time. It would be so good to be able to meet up with our forum friends ! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Cheers

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ok.gif Good job SueMac !
Guess what? I finally started walking on my treadmill yesterday. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif
Hubby did not waste anytime setting it up for me once I made a comment in regards to exercise the night before. See, when I woke up yesterday morning the machine was already set up and with my headphones there. My hubby was nowhere to be found and had gone to work. Hmmm...I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or as a hint. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
One question: Was getting the tattoo very painful? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif

Hi Sue! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/jump.gif
Congratulations on the gym membership AND the tattoo! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/foryou.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/foryou.gif
How fantastic for you that you have tried some new experiences, and I wish you well with the gym. Stay motivated at the beginning...It becomes easier when you start seeing and feeling results.
I got my first (and only) tattoo at the age of 40. I was going through a tough time emotionally, and it was my way of reminding myself that it is OK to put myself first once in a while. I may well have another done when I finally get a diagnosis. I've been looking at butterfly designs, too! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
