I put on sun screen yesterday, but it did not work. My arms broke out in a rash. On the bright-sdie-- I was wearing a hat, and my face did not. First time in a while. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I would hate to have to wear long sleeves all summer. What type of sun screen is the best?

Hi Chelly,
Sorry to hear that you are having problems with sun screen. I don't get any protection from any of them and I have tried them all. The doctor says my skin is too dry so the sun screen doesn't work. I do wear long sleeves all summer and long pants and a hat also. This is the only way I can keep from breaking out and getting sick.
You might hear of something that I don't know about so don't give up. There are a lot of people who have sun problems so maybe one will have just the answer that we need.
Best wishes for better help style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif

Hi Chelly, I went to portugal for a week and spent the whole time under a sun brolly! You are going to have to adapt to your situation or become ill. We cannot stay in the sun without covering up. I've found several companies on the web that offer protective clothing and they are made to be lightweight and durable.
Keep your skin moisturised and perhaps the sunblock will stay were it's supposed to be.
You need a very high factor or a total sun block to protect your skin. The sun is no longer your friend.
Take care and be well.

The Sunscreen needs to be 50+ or higher. If you search this topic here on the forum you will find links to some good products (not that I have tried them personally). My personal choice of sunscreen at this moment is 50+, unscented, uncoloured for use on babies. Try looking in the baby section of your pharmacy.
I agree with the others that you probably do need the added protection of clothing. Start a new trend in the "pale and interesting" look. I'm in there with you doing it too....

Hi, I'm new, but have read recently about something called RIT Sun Guard Fabric Rinse. It's suppose to be used in the washing machine and will help your clothing protect you from UV rays. I haven't tried it being newly diagnosed 2 weeks ago, but I sure plan on picking up a box to try it. I use to love the sun, however the last few years I've been very very ill from the exposure to it, and now know why.
Might not hurt to try it style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif Hi Chelly, I thought you knew,---The sun is your enemy.
I live in Florida, I have Neutrogena sunblock #45, but I still do not go
out in the sun without being covered. You can't do it, the suffering after is
just not worth it. Cover yourself up when you go in the sun, summer or winter.
Be well and keep posting. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif
Hi chelly,
The others have given you good advice. The only thing I can add is seeing as your Rhuemy isnt treating you until it 'gets worse' then I suggest a few photos of your rash may help to push him over the edge. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Once you start on something like Plaquenil it will help this to some degree, you will still have to take every precaution but you may not pay as dearly. It will help damp down the reaction.
love
