View Full Version : Lupus the disease to have

I went in for my 6 month Rheumy visit yesterday. Everything is looking pretty good blood test wise and he is just amiably chatting to me and my husband and he suddenly says, "You are lucky to have lupus instead of arthritis. Lupus is so much easier to get into remission and stay there. If I had to have a disease it would be Lupus."
Opinions?

He either must have success in getting Lupus into remission, or has not many Lupus patients. I guess maybe his point is you have a "chance" of getting into remission with Lupus and with athritis it is there and stays there.

hopefully he does have a lot of sucess in getting patience to remission.
i thought most Lupus patience's started with arthritis pain.
even when i do have remission i still have arthritic.
very intresting topic

My doc told me the two most likely candidates for what I have are RA and lupus. To be honest, I would prefer to have lupus. For the majority of people, RA is crippling and they are unable to work within about 5 years. Lupus is highly variable, and I can hope that my case will be mild and well-controlled with treatment. Of course, I might still end up disabled with lupus, but it is a maybe, not an almost definite thing.
I agree with the rheumy.
Fortunately, my RF came back negative. The front runner is now lupus.

I would be looking for another doctor.
I have entered it in my Little Black Book and it's a strong contender for the Clare.T DUH Award 2006

Great that you are feeling good at the moment though! Long may it last style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/highfive.gif

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rotfl.gif Exactly what I was thinking, Clare! Too funny!
Ok, I've done tons of reading & research on Lupus. Almost everyone who has the disease, has arthritis of some kind. The most common kinds with Lupus are: Lupus Arthritis & RA.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>More than 90 percent of people with SLE will experience joint and/or muscle pain at some time during the course of their illness. At the onset of the disease, the major complaint of more than half of SLE patients is pain in the joints.
The major cause of joint pain in SLE is inflammation of the joints. The term for this is arthritis. [/b][/quote]
http://www.lupus.org/education/brochures/jointpain.html
Also, Lupus doesn't *just* give you arthritis. It comes with many other nasty complications such as organ damage/failure, blood clots, blood diseases & CNS damage, just to name a few. Ask my Aunt Caroline if she would rather have arthritis or Lupus. She is in Kidney failure right now from Lupus Nephritis. She would take arthritis over dialysis any day of the week.
Sorry but, I would have ripped your doctor a new one. What a stupid thing to say.

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif Grrrrrr ..... some doctors have no class what so ever. Maybe what he meant was I am more likely to get a tropical vacation from a SLE patient as oppossed to a RA patient? Remember the brainy little dork know it all everyone hated in grade school ... they grew up and became doctors. Hope you stay in remmission and don't have to deal with this doc too much! Tracy
He gets the official Lupus Site style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif award for the week! What was he thinking!
My husband has RA, and is easily controlled with disease modifying treatment, has been for over 25 years. Its no fun and extremely painful but he doesnt face the day to day roller coaster we do. And he doesnt wonder which 'part' of him will be under fire next. He has also worked all that time and I have been unable to work for 5 or 6 years. I realise severity plays a big part in opinions on this but has your doc suffered either? One day in our shoes would cure him.

I did not know it was possible but sounds as if he has Arthritis of the brain and is causing severe inflamation and slowing his thought process.
Maybe it will go to his jaws and slow his mouth enough to give him a chance to think before he speaks.
It is either this or he was just trying to convey and since of good feeling and confidence in you.
I would have to judge him off of his other actions not this as even a doctor can open mouth and incert foot. Hopefully it is not in so far he can not see what he is doing.
My wife has both and the Lupus has been way more of a probelm then the RA.
Of course with Lupus or RA each case is diferent and each progesses at its own rate and has a diferent effect on the person who has it.

Thanks for the comments everybody! He is a silly young pup of a doctor whom I have to sometimes guide in the proper direction of my treatment. He likes to come on these boards and read comments about Rheumys maybe he will recognize himself and think twice before speaking. Laura

If lupus is the disease to have then he can have my lupus i am willing to give it away and if he thinks its so easy to deal with - let him live every day with lupus.
He certainly deserves the style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif award.

Hi again Laura style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/flowers.gif
As he likes to frequent these boards I think it might be a good idea to start a thread called 'Whats the most stupid thing your Rheumy ever said to you'! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif
Betcha he would read that one!

What a $%##@$%^! Does he suffer from lupus and know how bad it is for many of us? I would think it would be in one of the top ten worse diseases to have and no one should be "lucky" to have this to deal with this. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tantrum.gif

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rotfl.gif Joan.................well actually there is a thread like that somewhere funnily enough style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif so he's in good company but thankfully the majority of docs think before they implant their foot firmly in their mouths style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Laura,
I would run not walk as far away from him as I could. He is obviuosly not a lupus specialist. Does he not realize that lupus can kill you? I have both lupus and RA ( and more ) the RA dx came first and these days my RA is very quiet. I remember when my rheumy told me that I also had lupus and gave me some brochures about lupus. My heart sank that evening when I read them over and over again. No internet in 1989. I never wanted to just have RA so much as that evening.
We from time to time have special awards for people and doctors but have never put them in writing, mostly get discussed and awarded in the chat room. Maybe we should start an awards thread in just for fun style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

OMG...I wish he could walk in my steps since about March. Stupid stupid stupid doc. I wish none of us had any of these diseases and I would pick none of them.
It also makes me realize how lucky I am to have the wonderful rheumy that I have.
