hi all,

I am still pregnant at 39 weeks - I don't beleive it! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ok.gif and have to make a decision on a postpartum measles vaccine.

I have no immunity for German Measles despite being vaccined many years ago. THe OB wants to give me the vaccine postpartum as he says it is the best time as you cannot get pregnant for 3 months. I am concerned that because I have just given birth I might flare and as it is a live vaccine end up worse or with German Measles.

The Rhemy says it should be okay but my GP says definately not. I am on 5mg Prednisone and 200mg Plaquenil.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Bye for now.

JM

Hi Jodie,

It is really important that you get the vaccination before your next pregnancy, as rubella in pregnancy can cause heartbreaking birth deformities.

I'm guessing though that you aren't planning to get pregnant again ASAP? As long as you use a reliable form of birth control, I would suggest the best course of action is to wait to have the vaccination until you are a bit further down the line, and know how your health is post partum. You need to have the vaccine 3 months before you want to concieve again, but I think you could quite safely wait a while before having it, for example in 6-9 months time. Do you know the vaccination scedule for babies in OZ? In Europe it is in the MMR which I think is given at 9 months (?? I might be wrong about this??). Given that there is a theoreticl risk of developing german measles from the vaccine, I'd suggest that you get vaccinated before or at the same time as your baby.

All the best!

Cath,

Thanks for the advice. I think getting it once I have recovered and the same time as the bub woud be best. Not sure of the MMR schedule though.

I was worried about getting a live vac so soon after birth. I think that the rhemy is not that well versed on pregnancy and lupus. I asked about breastfeeding and my meds the other day and he said he couldn't see any problems with it, but I know that there are potential problems with milk production.

Anyway, have my fingers and toes crossed that out little 'sea monster' surprise arrives this week-end.
