View Full Version : coffee n lupus
I like coffee a lot. I usually drink 8,9 cups a day. However, I don't know if it's ok to drink like dat. right now, I'm tryin to lessen the amount of coffee I take in everyday. So far, not doin v much progress. Is it ok to drink coffee like dat? Is there any side effects in drinking too much coffee everyday for us lupiees? like in brains and in kidneys? I have nephrotic syndrome and I'm not sure if I shd drink coffee that much everyday.
The problem is I really like coffee. I like to drink it while I'm working on pc. It's like I can't live without it. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif I think I'm addicted or sth. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif

I love my cuppa joe everyone morning, but you do drink a lot! Maybe start mixing in some decaf to lower your caffeine intake. Possible side effects of too much caffeine include:
? Increased heart rate
? Increased heart muscle contraction
? Diuretic actions
? Altered effect on pleasure and reward centers of the brain
? Tremors, agitation, restlessness
? Insomnia, anxiety
? Periods of inexhaustibility
? Muscle twitching
? GI disturbance
? Rambling flow of thought or speech
? Seizures (in very high doses)
? Increased blood pressure

Hey as I write I have a medium ice coffee from Dunkin Donuts - if any of you know what that is - coffee place !!!!
I would definitely cut down, it dehydrates you and is not good for the arteries. If you must, try decaf.
But you can at least enjoy 1-2 cups a day !!

Sue,
Lessen your caffeine slowly so you don;t get the horrid headaches that come with caffeine withdrawal. I like my coffee also but the only 100% caffeinated coffee we make is the first pot in the morning. Then we make 50/50 pot next and then 1/4 or 1/3 caffeine if we make another pot before dinner. Nighttime we drink decaf. My hubby drinks more cups of coffee than I do. I have decided I need to cut my caffeine intake even more as it is so bad for circulation and I have scleroderma which includes raynauds. So I now drink an equal amount of water after each cup of coffee and I have probably cut my consumption in half. Somedays I forget to do the water thing but I am getting better about with each passing day.
Take care,
Karen

<span style="color:#006600"> update on the coffee overdose..
I'm tryin to lessen the coffee intake now. And it's working. I'm only drinking 4 cups max a day now (sometimes 5) from 8 at least. I'm gonna try to find decaf next time I go shopping. I forgot about it last time, so I'm still drinking the good old black right now. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif
Sometimes, I drink natural tea instead of coffee and it works much better than substituting water. I guess it's a good thing(?).
Thanks Karen for the advice! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif I'm trying it now.
hi paula,
how are u doing? btw, nice pic! I could totally relate to it. There was a time not so long ago when coffee=water for me. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bigsmile.gif

Hi Sue!
Karen was right in her ealier post - don't just switch over to decaf in one fell swoop. You might turn into the Wicked Witch of the West. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif Make half and half for a while, and then taper off the regular over time. I went decaf cold turkey about 2? years ago. My husband hid for a full week.
Natural tea also contains caffeine, although there are some decaf varieties out there. My favorite is rooibos.
Cheers! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/coffee.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/coffee.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/coffee.gif

I'm with crtikal_rn .we have all given up so much already.
Don't mess with my coffee, and smoking, I would more
than likely kill someone.
Hi all --
Until about 3 weeks ago I used to drink a couple pots of regular coffee a day. This summer I've been doing a lot more reading to research triggers for flares and the following is what I've found from several sources.
arthritis symptoms can be triggered, or made worse, by caffeine (coffee, chocolate, pop)
migraines can be triggered by the use of chocolate in addition to abrupt caffeine withdrawl
lupus (vascular system) symptoms can be triggered, or made worse, by tobacco smoke and use
Fibromyalgia symptoms can be triggered, or made worse, by tobacco smoke (first and second hand)
Who knows though. It seems for every site that has a caution, there's another saying it doesn't matter.
Best wishes to all.

Sue,
There are many herbal teas on the market that do not contain any caffeine. There are also flavored waters and carbonated juice drinks. You are doing fantastic on decreasing your coffee consumption. Give yourself several pats on the back.
I have actually heard that black tea has more caffeine than coffee. I remember being surprised when I read( or was I told) that fact. I guess one of us will have to do some research on that. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif
Take care,

No hugs and kisses for me?
I have had one cup of coffee in my life: hallucinated for four hours and was unconscious for eight. Some of us have really screwed up chemistry!
Doug, are you SURE it was just coffee you were drinking....? :wink2:

Boy Nancy.... you sound a lot like me... I used to love to suntan and do things like that with my kids. I even tried to work again this past week, only to be forced to quit after only a week. I hate having Lupus going on 9 yrs.... We have to give so much up and now I have to give up some food as well, because of the blood thinners am on.
Thanks for letting me add my two cents!

Actually it was coffee. And only coffee. I am allergic to fruit, but not to caffeine. It amuses me how many people seem to think that coffee contains only caffeine. "No thanks. I'm allergic to coffee." "But you drink cola! It has caffeine." "I'm allergic to something in the coffee that is not caffeine." "But....?" I have gone into analphylactic shock many times and "died" a couple of times - thank God for emergency wards - but it sure is not caffeine that is my problem. Lupus is my problem. Or maybe I am my problem and Lupus is one symptom: seems a reasonable description of an autoimmune disease. <grin>
Weird, Douglas! I've never heard of that. I probably would have assumed you couldn't have any caffeine too.

:coffee: I drink on average one pot (10 cups) of coffee a day, but have been known to have alot more. Most of the meds I take cause drowsiness, and top that with chronic fatigue, I don't think I could function without it!
For anyone interested in the facts, here is the scoop on caffeine -
An 8 oz cup of brewed coffee has about 135 mg of caffeine, an 8 oz cup of caffeinated tea has about 50 mg of caffeine, a 12 oz glass of Coca-Cola has about 34.5 mg of caffeine, and a 12 oz Diet Coke has 46.5 mg of caffeine.
Researchers say many Americans may not realize how much caffeine they're drinking because manufacturers are only required to list caffeine as an ingredient on the food or drink label, while the Nutrition Facts label does not specify the amount of caffeine in the product.
In addition, beverages marketed as high-energy drinks may contain more than one type of caffeine extract, and herbal sources of caffeine may not be listed as an active ingredient

I cant say I drink that much coffee each day. Only about three each day - three pots that is which only equals about thirty cups for me.
I try to stay balanced so I make sure I look at some water from time to time and drink one glass of milk each day. And it's not split up between my cups of coffee.
Smoke about two packs of cigarettes each day and quit each time I put one out and start again as soon as I put the next one in my mouth.
Tried to cut back on coffee one time and it was more like walking around in a fog all day.
Not sure where my head was but it sure was not attached.

"Weird, Douglas!" you wrote, Zara.
To prevent my bursting into tears I shall assume that the comma is not a misprint and that "Weird" is not and adjective describing "Douglas". :)
Today has been one of those lovely almost painfree days.

Well...since I don't know you I can't say you are weird, but there is always the possibility....of course, I could be a psycho maniac too, haha. Just kidding.
Glad you had a nice day. Obviously sans the cup of joe. :)

I agree with moderate intake...because with all the fatigue we suffer, if anyone ever told me to stop drinking caffiene then I would have to kill them for I would not be able to function after about 11 in the morning...which is hard enough to do as is! I will say that I have stopped drinking caffiene of any kind whether is coffee or my beloved Diet dr Pepper at noon and that has made a difference in how well I sleep at night. Which is always a crap-shoot anyway! It is so funny to see how addicted we all are to caffiene!!
