View Full Version : Oligoclonal bands and lupus???
style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/overhere.gif Hi is it possible if anyone could tell me if the Oligoclonal bands show up in the CSF and the blood samples taken in a lumbar puncture if you have lupus. I know there are a lot of other things this can show up in but if you have lupus would you have these bands in both the CSF and in the blood.
many, many thanks for your thoughts and replies

Jo

style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wavey.gif Hi Jo, I do know that there is no one blood test that can tell you
wether or not if you have lupus. Having said that, I feel very strongly that
there would not be any test that would be able to give you a deffinate
diagnosis. Diagnosing lupus is a very complicated thing and it is a collection
of a lot of tests, symptoms, and observations. I hope this helps you some.
Be well and keep posting. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif
Hi jo,
I think the only two I can remember are Dar and I think? Hazel? You could pm them.

I thought that was more commonly found in MS than in lupus but I don't know for sure.
Have you had these found in you then? I am curious because just had a brain MRI with indications
of the start of either MS or my lupus is also now attacking my brain (and I think that I may be heading down this road
of lumbar puncture myself soon).
style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Thanx.gif thanks for all your replies, I am about to add another question... sorry for all these questions,,, dont know where else to turn. Maia, please dont worry about your lumbar puncture, DRINK PLENTY and I mean PLENTY of caffiene based drinks ie coffee or regular coke and stay flat for as long as possible and this will eliminate any headaches. My LP showed the OCB's in both the blood and the CSF. good luck with yours and I hope you are ok.

Jo

Hi
I think the presence in CFA of oligoclonal bands is much higher in MS than in APS or lupus but I might be wrong
Here's an article about MS v APS

(2000)
Have you been tested for lupus anticoagulant and anti cardiolipin antibodies ?
All the best

Hi Maia,
Some people tout coffee as a good thing to have after a lumbar puncture, people with migraines take meds that actually contain it, or they sometimes drink a lot of coffee. The reason for that is it shrinks the blood vessels or something similar. I was told to keep well hydrated with water and it seemed to help, so in a sense they are fairly different - coffee has some diuretic effects and sends me to the loo all the time anyway (counter productive when moving around after the procedure is a no-no). I'd be guided by what your doc advises however.
THE single most important rule to follow after a lumbar puncture is to lay flat for as long as you can, by that I mean even 24hrs is needed for some patients (with toilet breaks of course style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif ) Some patients arent told of this and sent home very soon after the procedure. If you are sent home early after then hightail it to bed and remain lying flat for as long as is possible. Post lumbar puncture headaches are more prevalent in those who get up and walk around too soon after, its because of altered pressure in the brain/cerebro spinal fluid) from taking the specimen.
The procedure itself was fine, it was the thought of it that was more scary (((((((Maia))))))
