style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif Hi all. Just wondering if anybody can tell me how long I have to rest the joints that have been injected. I had my left shoulder and right thumb 'done' but was not given any instructions by the rheumatologist.

Amerwee,

My joint injections are done by my pain specialist and his rule of thumb is 6 months. At the moment I just have to get my right hip done as it has bursitis. You want to do them as seldom as possible so that the steroids don't cause destruction of the joint. Some doctors may do them more frequently than 6 months. The other injections that you can have more frequently are called trigger point injections. In May I decided to just have the trigger point and skip the joint. That has worked well till just the last few days. So in August I will have another joint injection which will be 9 months from the last one.

Take care,
Karen

I had one done last June and that worked wonders but when it wore off I knew about it. I had it redone in January this year and it didn't work at all. Just had the injection about 5 weeks ago and it was fine for 3 weeks but now starting to get painful again. It just varies from person to person I think. After having the injections I was told to rest for at least a couple of days.

I think it depends on what joint is getting the injection. I have pretty bad carpal tunnel and my doc says I can get cortisone injections but have to leave my wrist in brace for 3 to 5 days and not use it at all during that time. Good luck!

I have had my hips and elbows injected and while they remained to be sore for a couple of days after, it gradually went away after a few more days.
