Hi

The two main things that cause chest pain in people Lupus seem to be pleurisy and Costochondritis. both can cause pain and tightness of the chest.

Pleurisy is inflamation of the pleura which lie between the lungs and the ribcage. Pleurisy tends to cause sharp, stabbing pain when taking a breath, it can be cause by infections like a cold, in which case you may have a headache as well. http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/articles/article.aspx?articleId=287&sectionId=6941

Costochondritis is an inflamation of the cartilage of the ribs. This can be caused by injury, infection etc. This causes pain when pressing on the ribs, If you press on your breastbone and this hurts then you may have this.

I would check with your GP if your symptons change or it hasn't cleared up by itself in a few days. Anti-inflamatories normally help a bit, if the pain is particularly bad, your GP may suggest something a bit stronger.

hope this helps,

Another thought would be acid reflux or it could be a more serious problem such as your heart. Regardless, you really need to mention this to your doctor immediately.

I agree with getting it checked out. Chest pain has to be taken seriously - heart attack rates among young women with lupus are horrendously high compared with well women of the same age group.

We can't suggest what it is because that could be diagnosis by default and give you false reassurance resulting in you not getting the right medical care.
Anyway you need a record of the trouble for your lupus diagnosis.

I hope it isn't anything serious and clears up soon

Hi Mook's.
Hope your feeling a bit better today,
I would definately get it checked out also,

All the best to ya,

You definately need to have it checked out as soon a possible. Pericarditis is common also and resembles a heart attack. http://www.webmd.com/hw/heart_disease/hw169348.asp Hard to tell if you havn't experienced one though.

I hope it's just something minor, but always take chest pain seriously.

Please get checked out! It could also be pulmonary embolism-blood clots in your lungs. I had chest pain for a month with shortness of breath and felt like elephant on my chest-it was blood clots in my lungs. I could have died! Kimb:sad:

Whether it mild or severe...always get chest pain checked out by your DR. So many different things can cause chest pain. Better safe than sorry. :o)
