View Full Version : Skin problems - Allergy?

Just wondering if lupus can actually cause new allergies? :worried:
Reason I ask is I had a (sorry if this sounds vile) weeping hole appear on the side of my breast. Not sure what it is or what caused it. I got the first aid kit and gave it a clean and all the rest of it, and put a small melolin dressing over it.
Anyway, I swapped the dressings over for a normal fabric plaster when it started to heal a few days later. I went to take the plaster off the following day to see I had come out in a rash (lots of pin prick blood blisters) and it was making my skin peel. It spread on either side of the plaster too.
I've used these plasters before with no problem, but I thought I would test another plaster and put one on my foot and one of my side and leave it for a few hours. And low and behold, I came out in a rash!
So now I have three 2" wide very itchy rashes on me
It just makes no sense I have suddenly started to have a reaction to something I have used before several times.
I've added it onto my list of things to tell the consultant when I go back on 21st anyway, but I just wondered if it was common to get a new allergy like this?

I am going to assume you are talking about a bandage. Many people suddenly develop an allergy to these products. It could be because they changed some of the glue, the processing, etc. Don't give up. I would allow the body to heal and then try a different brand of "plasters" and see what happens. Hopefully you can find a product that will work for you. It is just another frustration that we Lupies have to contend with.

Thanks for your reply :hehe:
Its just bizarre how this has just started happening as I used some from the same packet only the other week and I had no reaction :worried:
Looks like I'll be using my daughters winnie the pooh ones for a while now instead

Last Year I became allergic to the plasters they put on at the hospital after a blood test and I been having regular blood tests 17 years, same brand of plaster. I asked them if they have changed the brand they said NO.

Hi
Am undiagnosed. It was allergies that I kept getting (apart from other symtoms) that finally got me into doing something about feeling ill.
That was two years ago. My allergies I think have got better. Its hard sometimes to know what is an allergy despite classic symptoms.
I went to a Lupus meeting where a specialist nephologist gave a talk.
I asked if there was any link between allergies and lupus.,
His reply was: 'not in his experience, its more possible that the thyroid is involved if allergies are a problem'.
From what I understand there are many people with lupus who have other symptoms that seem to be outside the lupus.
My personal opinion is that we are very chemical beings and a bit like a car if one thing begins to tire and not work properly generally if has an effect on something else and the general performance of the car.
I think and this is in my humble opinion ,that the immune system plays up and will react to things it never did before.
I have read that you can become allergic one day to something that never bothered you before that is not unusual,
Neals Yard in Brighton near where I live have some helpful people who seem to know their stuff so to speak. A gentleman told me that multiple allergies are usually a sign that something like adrenal glands are not working properly,
So endocrine system can be looked at.
Sorry I have gone on a lot for what was asimple question to your plaster
allergy,
I write in the hope any info will always be helpful to anybody::) Nicky

Nicky A big thank you for your post. I could relate to it. I been DX some 17 years, but as time as gone on and in My Case My Lupus has got worse I am sure I am so more allergic. Like for example the plasters, but also to chemical stuff. I get awful rashes/flares, so I have since last year, been making my own home made natural cleaning stuff, for home use, even my own beauty products, no I don't sell them. I have to be a few more hoem made recipes up on the boards here. I also found out the other year from the Hospital I have a wheat /gluten allergy. Helps with the weight loss, but I do miss the cookie jar :( In My case and a few other people, I have a severe allergy to sunlight and many forms of artifical light. Also I am allergic to a few drugs even before Lupus dx such as septrin
Found a few links on Lupus and allergies? interesting reading.
