Just wanted to find out if anyone here gets sores up their nostril. :? Seem to have one permanently on the septum between the two nostrils. It hurts and weeps so the nose gets blocked from time to time. And sometimes when I blow my nose it bleeds.

Is this a common thing with Lupus?. I do get a few mouth ulcers about once a month, but not heard of sores up your nose.

Thank God for this site, found out that I have an awful lot in common with you guys, every time a drop in I find I have something similar to someone else...more boxes ticked for the rheumy.....

yes, i think its alupus thing too. i get them in my nose and mouth and they can be very painful, salt water swishes seem to help the ones in my mouth and saline nasal spray for nose, seems to dry them up, i am not a doctor and you should always ask your doctor before doing anything new. Hope you feel better....Melissa

I have gotten them twice, the first time was very painful. My doctor gave my antibiotics, which of course did no good. My rheumatologist could see them up there very high with a scope. She said the salt water spray would work, but it made it even worse. But they did begin to feel better a few days after I stopped the spray, so maybe I over-did the spray when I was using it. Maybe if you keep vaseline or a salve over it, it will heal better.

Hi Lynda, sorry to hear about the nose ulcers. Definitely keep your doctors in the loop. I get those as well & have had one pretty constantly this last year. Mine was very near a blood vessel & would sometimes bleed uncontrollably. At that point I learned the ER & your ear nose throat Dr. can cauterize the ulcer.

The one thing that has helped to keep my nose free of getting worse is a 2x daily saline solution through a water pik attachment specifically made for this purpose. (People with allergies often use it). But, it has to be with "kosher" salt. If you have an ENT Dr. they would aware of the saline flush & could give you direction if that might help in the long term. (I've done so many rounds of antibiotics that they do not really work anymore).

But, yes overall the nose ulcers can be a part of Lupus - especially with the problem healing. They are not as common as mouth ulcers though for Lupus patients. But, you do need to be careful if you are having blood noses - especially if they do not stop within a limited amount of time.

Hope that helps - take care of yourself.

I've had two sores in my nose this last year...the first one just kept crusting over and then finally I was able to get it off and it came with nose hairs still attached, bled a bit and left a funny, shiny bald patch up my nostril. LOL
The second one was up much higher, just out of reach...I'd felt it up there for about a month, partially blocking my air flow in my right nostril and just generally being annoying and sore.
Finally, one night I blew my nose a good honk before bed, and something flew down and lodged in my nostril completely blocking off air. I couldn't blow it out...had to sort of adjust it and pry it out with my fingernail (sorry, I know this is gross) and it was not like any normal booger I ever saw.
It looked like a membrane of some sort almost. About the size of a dime, clearish, flexible...Bizarre.
And immediately after that I got the worst nose bleed I've ever had.
It was at first a splatter that was so forceful that little bits of blood made it up into my hair and onto my shirt.
Then it was a steady trickle that lasted for two hours...I was just about ready to call someone to take me to the ER when it finally stopped, but my nose felt swollen, hot and weird for about a week afterwards.
I stuck triple antibiotic ointment up there and just made darn sure not to bump my nose on anything.
No fun at all....and this was before I knew about Lupus and nose sores.
It was a weird relief to read that it happens to other people and that there's a reason for it.

i smear a little vaseline on my finger and annoint my nostrils when I have nose sores (yep, I stick my finger up my nose, very polite!)

I find that it stops them drying out and then they heal better and faster. It's about the cheapest 'fix' for anything I have ever discovered

Hi Lynda

Yep I get these too! They are horrible and can be very painful! I get mouth ulcers too but thankfully although more frequent they do not seem quite so bad.

When the nose ulcers are at their worst I can hardly touch the outside of my nose!!

take care

I'm going to stick my nose in here as well. I get them quite frequently, as a matter of fact I have one now. Of course it is in the most delicate spot known to man and makes my eyes water and gives me the sensation of an upcoming sneeze each time I bump my nose. At first I thought they were pimples only to realize that I was wrong. Not sure if there is anything that we can do about them or not, as far as making them goaway on a permanent basis..................probably not, that would be too easy.

Until then, I will continue to wave my Puffs Plus in the air!!
