Hi everyone! I was wondering if anyone has experienced severe back pain while in a flare? I've had a bad flare that's lasted almost 3 months. THe whole time I've been having pain in my back. I feels like a squeezing and aching. Over the last week this pain has been increasing. THe dr.s are checking into it, but so far have been unable to give me any sort of answer as to what is causing it. Just wondering if any of you had similar symptoms. Thanks a million!

Hi, Alicia! ;)
Sorry to hear about your back pain. :(
I think mooks had a good point in her reply. We can get pain in just about any (sometimes seems like 'every') part of our body. And it seems it can hang on for as long as it likes.
I hope you're getting medical help for the symptoms and not simply investigation. What is the point of finding out what it is if you aren't helped in some way in the process. You need to be able to rest at night, at least, so that would be a main concern if your pain is not at least controlled so you can get some sleep.
If your regular docs won't help with the pain, I think you should get a referral to a pain specialist doc as they aren't afraid to do what is needed to make our lives bearable.
Hope you begin to feel better soon!

Hi Alicia
I get a lot of discomfort in my back and just recently have had a "squeezing" and tightness that has lasted 6 weeks. It appears to be easing off a bit again now. I have had it before and it seems to be around the rib area radiating towards the back. Although mine is not really bad pain I absolutely hate the feeling. I sometimes feel as tho I want to stretch my arms up to relieve the pressure on my rib cage. I mentioned it to my rheumie before and he said it was inflammation in the muscles/tendons etc between the ribs?????
I hope yours eases soon and you can be free of it, it is an awful feeling!

Howdy Alicia. I too have had that feeling, though it quickly turns into agonizing pain through the hips and kidney area. It is one of the worst parts of my SLE since I end up frozen in one place and too scared to move because if I move all the infernal wolves bite down at once on the inside of my hip structure. I pray yours pain does not get worse. Please mention this to your MD and *make* him or her at least make a note of this. We know that part of mine is OA but the rest is just put down to SLE. <sigh>

Hi,
I have horrendus back pain, I go to a pain clinic and recieve epidural nerve blocks they help a great deal, I also have pain in my hips to the point where I sometimes can't stand up. My doctor said I was to young for OA, and she recently sent me to have a triple phase bone scan to see what type of bone issues I was having. I also have inflammatory arthritis. Not sure what it is, but it is painful.
Good luck in your search and hope you feel better soon.

You might ask doc for the lidocaine patches for back. I use these sometimes. I have terrible back pains mines mainly due to the muscles I believe. Anyway they do seem to ease the pain for me.
Take care
