Ok, odd question time. Last night/early this morning, I woke up choking something awful. It was bad enough that I woke up my husband, whom sleeps like a hibernating bear. Anyway, I could tell that I had saliva blocking my airway and I couldn't catch my breath. When I finally did catch my breath, and half of the free world was now awake, it felt like I had a continual running of water in my throat and that every time I would cough, I would feel the liquid. I finally got a drink of Mt Dew to help the problem whatever it may be. Any thoughts??????

Just my thought - could it be post nasal drip. That is what I experience and it feels like running water down the back of your throat.

How awful~I am sorry. Paula had a great idea. I have been waking up choking on bile/regurgitation and it literally has taken my breath so then I panic. It is a distinct icky sour taste. Post nasal drip also has a nasty taste. :ohno:
Drinking a liquid always help and then I pop tums or down mylanta depending how bad it is.
I would tonight elevate your head and then decide if you need a decongestant/antihistamine or antacids. I hope this helps some. I hope you are feeling good in every other way.

Hi Nancy,
Sorry you've experienced this. I can't remember, do you have SJS or FM? I have both along with asthma. Several nights per week I'm awakened by choking. There is sometimes the "fluid sensation" . Mine are normally one of two things: a cough that I'm not aroused from deep sleep to do or the worst of the two-muscle spasms of the esophogus.
I've been told by my ENT that anytime a person begins to choke it triggers an anxiety type/survival response, you cough to remove the airway blockage, if not immediately cleared the eyes, nose and mouth begin extra fluid production to remove the foreign body. Also, because of the temporary loss of normal airflow the heart beats faster. All these combined make for a very scary and yet exhausting experience. If it happens again do contact your doc for further investigation.

Hugs,

Michelle
