Does anyone else have breathing problems in the cold weather? I've noticed this winter that it has been really hard to breather when I am outside in the cold for long periods of time, or if I have to run outside. Not only do I have a constant stabbing pain in my lungs, but the cold makes me get short of breath and cough alot. Any Ideas or suggestions. I see the rheumatologist on monday so hopefully i can get some answers.

Brrrrr.......why would you run out in the cold?????
If you have to be outside, then I would wear one of those painters masks that you can get at any discount store like Walmart, Home Depot, etc. I would also wear a scarf. The air in the winter time is very dry, which makes it harder to breath.
Good luck! And if you feel the need to run, take precautions.

Manni,
I find it hard to breathe in the cold too. Actually we just had a bit of a cold spell here in Pa, and I have felt horrible. Every joint in my body hurts. I was just telling a friend that I think I have to move where the weather is warm, so I don't have to deal with the cold.

Here in Klamath Falls OR it is cold also. I have more problems with Reynauld like symptoms. No stabbing with breathing. but my middle fingers and big toes and my nose go numb when I feed my horses.Joints really ache when the barometric pressure changes. Does anyone get migraines when the pressure changes? I'm a walkeing weather reporter around here.

Hi Manni:)
I find it harder to breathe when it's cold too, but there is a "bright side" to being out in the cold--when I was in Sweden for the Christmas holidays, my joints hurt less when it was really cold (I think it was because the were numb!) but would hurt extra much when I thawed out indoors, bummer! I have a theory that people just weren't meant to live in cold climates--we would never make it without heating and warm clothes. I think birds have a good point when they migrate:wink2: I wish I could migrate too:lol:
Hi chocolate :) I live in Iceland and I totally agree with you and the birds :) Florida sure sounds nice right now, or Arizona.... We had some cold weather earlier this month and I´m having an everlasting cold and fever :sigh: I´m looking forward to springtime :)

Hi, yes, the air is so dry in the winter, it leaves no moisture in your lungs, which means that they are very dry. When your llungs and stuff are very dry, you end up huffin and puffin, and it is hard to just to say a couple of words.

Manni,
I have asthma as a result of my lupus, and it behaves exactly the way you describe in cold weather. Is it possible you might have, too?
I would certainly describe these symptoms to your physician or see a pulmonologist who may be able to help you.
I know, I, for sure, will be glad when warmer temps and summer comes!

Yup, my asthma causes this problem. Actually any extreme change in weather, if it is too hot and you go into air conditioning, or you are in a warm house and go into the cold.
Do you have asthma?

i've recently been having the same problem. as soon as i go outside it's harder to breath and i cough.
i don't have asthma, but i do smoke. i thought maybe it because of that, except it only happens when its really cold.

As far as I know I don't have asthma. My rheumy didn't seem to worried about it the other day, said let her know if it gets worse and they'll run some more tests. After the single digit temps and foot of snow the last couple days I'm thinking the best bet is move some place warm and tropical.:)
