:) Hi
I was wondering if anyone could tell me if thyroid problems and palpitations could be linked to lupus?
Today i have been to see the nurse has a few weeks ago i had my blood pressure taken and it was quite high so it need to be re-cheacked today. Blood pressure was fine, but there are now concerned over my pulse rate which was fast (around 139)
Sine Tuesday of this week i have been getting these funny sensations in my chest. When i discribed them to the nurse she said they were palpitations
The nurse has took some blood to check my thyroid, and has put me on a 2 week course of beta blockers to help slow my heart down. ( not sure if the palpitations and thyroid could be linked)
Anyway i was wondering if all this could be linked with lupus of just a nother condition to add to the ever growing list! :worried:
Thanks
Bev

Hi there
I have a thyroid issue and am on medication, this was the first step in a long line of tests that lead to Lupus. Lupus is a disaese that masks alot of other stuff so you need to keep getting things checked. When they finally got the meds right for the thyroid which in itself can take a year as they have to keep checking your bloods etc you need to keep on it. For me they got the meds correct in accordance with my bloods but I still felt rubbish. Lots of people I knew said once I was on the meds I would feel good again but I didnt so then along came LUPUS
Palpatation can be part of the thryoid complaint, it can swing both ways I was over active for a month and then extremely underactive, either way it affects yor metabolism so incorrect balance of the thyroid gland can easily lead to palpatations which in turn hosts alot of other things as the heart is beating faster....I am sure you aware that weight can also be affected as I knwo lots of people that diet for years and years and just cannot shift the weight only to have a blood test to find out they have a thyroid issue.
Thyroid is another one that isnt always picked up on a blood tests whch is why sometimes you will need to go back a few times until its picked up. Just keep in yor mind that you know your not right and hang onin there
Good Luck

Hi Bev,
Last summer, I had heart palpitations for a few months. They finally stopped and my heart rate went back to normal, only after my FP changed my dose (Synthroid). However, I'm still dealing with an unbalance thyroid and hopefully we'll get it under control soon. :worried:
My suggestion to you, is to get it checked out, just to be safe.
With a butterfly hug,

I got my blood results back today and the full blood count was fine and so was my thyroid.
I am seeing my gp on 08.05.07 has i am still getting the palpitations even tho i am on beta blockers.
Does anyone know of any condition or have any information on what could be causing the palpitaions? I have read that drinking, smoking, fizzy drinks, coffee, diet pills can all cause palpitations but i dont do none of them!
Any information would be helpful!
Thanks
Bev :)

Bev,
I have hypothyroidism and have taken synthroid for about 15 years now. My thyroid function has only changed once during this time. I required a increase in the level of medication needed to bring me to normal blood levels. Not every person will have ups and downs in levels.
I occasionally experienced the symptom you describe. My heart rate is never that high though. I have finally narrowed it down to taking calcium supplements or eating one of those high vitamin breakfast cereals. Every time i have the palpations, " PVC's" begin again. I have even had to wear a 25 hour heart moniter. It confirmed but did not give the reason for the condition.
I have normal level of calcium in my blood work but the extra seems to cause a " cardiac irritability" in me. I have run into a couple of people who also have this problem. The amount of milk i drink dosent seem to make a difference. So I just make sure to get in my daily required servings of milk.
You may want to look at your diet and vitamins, any changes that may occure upon the onset of the symptoms? Just a thought, good luck with the investigation. Lisa

Lisa - Thanks for the information.:)
I dont take any vitamins so i know it cant be that!
Has for my diet i am usually fairly healthy with the odd take away or chocolate every now and then! but it would be interesting to see if i get a palpitation after having certain food, i will have to take notice.
I am back at my gp's today (08.05.07) for a check up on the palpitations so i may be sent for more tests has i am still getting them!
Thanks again
Bev
