HI everybody
I have just claimed DLA but not holding much hope after reading what some of you have said about the problems you have or are having getting DLA.My main problem is that i can not always drive my car as it has not got power steering and this results in me being off work on a regular basis.I am sure i would manage better with a manual ,power assisted car but i just do not have the cash to get one anyway i will keep hoping i get some one who is in a good mood on the day my claim is looked at x:rolleyes:

best of luck with this...
I think its like with your driving test, it depends where you live, what sort of mood the person is in and how many they have already put through that day.
Fingers crossed for you if you are meant to get it I am sure you will lots of people do...

Good Welfare Rights advice helps. Also if you become worse or think of anything else remember to inform them as it may make a difference to your claim. Like you, I couldn't even get my car out of the road without power steering. Claims can take quite a while to decide, if they seek further info. Also they rarely award DLA for a very long period on a first claim as they take the view treatment may help. Took me a couple of renewals before I got it for an indefinite period. My first couple of awards were only two years each.
Is there a Credit Union in your area or could work help you get a better car?
It is important for you to have transport.
Will be cheering you on,

Hi Lola
Can you tell me about Credit Union please ? I've never heard of them in the UK.
Thanks
Clare
Oh, PS I thought they were not supposed to take account of possible improvements from meds or treatments. Theory v practice I suppose

Good Luck Moni
Remember that, like everything else, it's usually the people with problems who write in.
Let us know !
Clare
Hi all,
Very interesting what you said about improvement. I have been awarded it for 2 years before they will decide if I need reassessment. Even then I dont know what the reassessment will involve, I would think its possible I will have to do the whole thing again.
In Australia, you have to be shown to be compliant with medication and be taking optimum meds to improve your condition before they will even consider your application.
You must not be able to work even 15 hrs per week and expected to not improve in the next two years. Your med regime must have been implemented and explored thoroughly for maximum benefit before they will even consider a disability claim.
Makes sense really because otherwise they would be handing it out to people who perhaps could do a whole lot better if they were on the correct medical treatments.
I'm interested in how the different systems work with disability all over the world.

Dear Clare,
Theory versus Practice is a problem alright! I am going on what it says in the Notes for Examining Medical Practitioners. I accessed them through the "yourable"site.
www.abcul.org will get you to the info.on Credit Unions.
I am a volunteer Committee Member for mine. They are good for people who can't get conventional loans, interest rates are not bad and they usually offer free insurance on loans. They are also good for freeing people from loan sharks,by allowing you to pay off expensive loans with a lower interest one. Considering what some of the Doorstep Lenders charge, this can be a very good thing.
They have come to my rescue numerous times and are definitely keen to help!
Also,my one offers a Funeral plan,2,000 payout for up to six Family members for about £ 10 a month. Helpful for those of us who can't get decent Life Insurance.
I see you are in London, Credit Unions are certainly active there,so I hope this may be useful to you.
They are regulated by the FSA so are not here today, gone tomorrow.
Our American friends have had them even longer than us I think!

Hi LoLa
Thank you for that very interesting information- I had no idea it existed in the UK. My husband was employed by a USA company and we paid into a Credit Union account associated with the company for many years.
I'm sure the info about them will come in handy for many - there doesn't seem to be a branch in my outer London area - leafy Surrey and all that hehe
Bye for now

Dear Clare,
Well leafy Surrey is very pleasant. The latest thing the Credit Union has rescued me on is Private Dental costs! Like many of us,I cannot get an NHS Dentist and recently, annoyingly broke a tooth. I am really upset as my teeth were one of my few good bits!
One way some people use it is to pay in an amount each month instead of Pet Insurance then if you don't need a Vet. you still have what you would have spent in premiums as savings.
My Son also took out a loan to help him with his business start up. He is a Magician, not a cheap thing to set up.
Hope you are well Clare, and Thanks for all your hard work here,
x Lola
