I'm sure this has been in many threads...but sometimes its so hard trying to sift through them. I was wondering if anyone could share what they call the 'brain fog'??

There have been things happening as of late that I've honestly been trying to ignore. I guess its just me wanting all of this to disappear.

When I went by the GP's this morning to make my appt they wanted me to fill out a form to make sure my details were correct. I couldn't even remember my phone number :( Now that might not seem like anything...but in my family I'm actually known for how well I can remember numbers...pin numbers, phone numbers...I have a bit of a photographic memory. I'm such a nut that I can even remember the take out number for a sub shop from 12 years ago LOL

But this morning I was totally blank and confused...and this has been happening a lot more often lately. I guess it could be all the stress but even my coordination has been off. And I'm constantly forgetting to take my meds when I need to - which is also not like me.

Feels like sometimes my brain just goes out the window  Its like I'm losing my edge if that makes any sense.

it's quite funny having my hubby try to guess what i actually mean.

I asked him to pass me an orange juice the other day to take my tablets with; he asked me where they were and i replied "in the bathroom" - for bathroom i meant fridge! Funny thing was a bag of shopping had been left in the bathroom (we have a downstairs bathroom next to the kitchen) and they were actually in the bathroom!!!

A doctor came round to assess me for DLA a few days ago, and i couldn't remember the month when he asked me; nor could i remember how to draw 10.30 on a clockface.

I have an excellent memory, or should i say had; always remembering trivia, important dates, numbers etc. It's very frustrating isn't it.

I think we should definitely have our own dictionary...:rotfl:

Hi Amanda,
Believe me, what you're experiencing is normal for us. I too am the one in the family who used to remember everything. Now, the brain fog can be really frustrating. It is literally like you're in a fog. I'm not sure if you have the part when you're talking to someone and the words just won't come out. I'll be trying to explain something and "blank." Nothing. It can get especially embarassing when I'm talking to someone important, like my boss. I fumble with my words and end up looking foolish. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one.

As the hot weather sets in, i have found myself drink more liquids with ice.
Lately my husband and I have found the refrigerator and the freezer left open over night. I admit it is me, forgetting to close it.
I have also forgotten my childrens phone numbers and ended up calling strangers.
I notice all of this happens more when i am stressed and or have been out in the sun a bit to much. Its the fibromyalgia that gives us brain fog.

I frquently ask for the wrong thing. For example at Railway Station I asked for a Tea Towel when I meant a Time Table!!!
Like you I used to have a great memory. Recently I had a 25 minute phone conversation which I could remember nothing of. My Best Friend generally tells me to get off the phone when she knows I have totally lost it and then fills me in the next day on the rubbish I have said!!
I have had some bad CNS problems so maybe mine is more than just brain fog.
In any case you have my commiserations!

 Hi there, I think since so many of us have it, yes me too, that it is probably part of the bag of tricks of lupus. I have recenyly found that i forget short term and long term things, which really bothers me, and drives hubby crazy. Me, well it scares th heck out of me.
But at my next appt. I am going to have to discuss this with my rheumy. It is a very real problem.

This "brain fog" is a very real thing. As everyone else has said, I too had a really good memory for phone #'s, trivia, dates, etc. I can't tell you how many times I have gone to my doctor's office on the wrong day, forgotten conversations I've had with my children. They look at me like I am an alien sometimes. I get lost while driving and am a little fearful that I will forget to put the car in drive and instead go in reverse. It's pretty frightening. I went to a neurologist for testing because I have a history of alzheimer's in my family, but that test came out okay. He just kind of gave up on me after that and had no answer for my symptoms.

I wonder if Ginkgo Biloba or some other herbal thing might help. Anyone ever tried it?

Hi Merrill

I dont know much about Ginkgo Biloba but a quick google search showed that it should not be used by anyone on blood thinning medication as it can increase blood thinning.

Ginkgo may decrease the ability of blood to clot. Tell medical personnel that you are using this product before you have surgery or dental work performed.

also

Before using this product, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription medications you may use, especially: blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), aspirin, NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen), trazodone.
Check all labels for nonprescription pain relievers or fever reducers, as many contain aspirin or NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen or ketoprofen. Consult your pharmacist if you are uncertain.

Its always prudent to ask your doctor about introducing any herbal remedies into your regime. Some of them are very potent and can interact with a range of other drugs we might be on.

Take care

a lot of times I want to answer posts on here as I can have some information that would help. or just to say hello. but the words are locked in my brain and won't come out.I find even talking to doctors I can't tell them what is wrong as I can't ........... word missing there.I am so tired of it.I feel dumb. I am going through a period of not talking to people, because I don't make sense...... so you are not alone

I notice mine mostly during Bible study. There is a point I want to get across because I've found something in the text, and the thoughts are in my brain but the words just aren't there. Anytime I want to share something really important... it just isn't there. I think some of it is worrying about it when I know it is going to happen.

I am another who used to remember everything and now have
to write stuff down...I handed my 7 year old some folded towels
and told her to put them in the refrigerator... I have put things in
the refrigerator that don't belong and leave things scattered all
over the house in odd places... my family has kinda gotten used
to just putting things where they go when they find them out
of place

I have been shuffled about from several doctor lately for both
lupus and my brain tumor... each has you fill out a history...I have
a page with all important phone numbers and dates written down
so I get them right...for what ever reason dates are something
that gives me problems..

Yesterday on my lists of surgeries I had listed gall bladder...
the doctor wanted to know when ...I said about 25 years ago...
and he asked me didn't I remember the date...I had to sit and
work it out...I had surgery when my twins were 4 month old ... three
days after my birthday... they were born in 1980 so that made it
November 15 1980 so it has actually been 26 years , 5 months
and 15 days give or take a day or two...

Dorky doctor kinda laughed at the way I had to figure that out:mad:
At least he is one I won't be seeing again ...
