Ok.... this is going to sound odd. When I'm on steriods... I'm 15 lbs lighter than being off of them. Does being on steriods destroy muscle mass? I'm eating less and exercising more off the steriods and think most of what I've gain has been muscle. I have only gone up one clothing size in those whole 15 lbs. Any advice? I had thyroid labs checked last week. TSH of 1.0 and Free T4 of 1.1 (Range .8-1.8). It's on the low end but okay. I'm wondering if part of the weight gain is me getting healthy again? My lowest was 112 in the hospital. Has anyone experience this pattern off steroids?

well, when I first got sick, I lost lots of weight. I've never been able to regain back to my original weight. for sure though, you'll probably have less bone density from the prednisone.

Steroids can destroy muscle mass, over time. I find I lose a fair amount of wieght when on Prednisone and don't really gain much back. If your working out and have only gone up one clothing size, I would say the wieght is muscle wieght.

Normally I gain weight on steroids but I remember one time I was in a bad flare and I had lost like 20 pounds even though I was on the steroids.

Hi, I am experiencing the same weight gain off steriods! I however was not lean before going on steriods, but I was muscular and active. Gained 40 pounds with steriod/chemo treaments for kidney failure. Been off steriods for 1 year now and no change. How depressing is that. Work out with a trainer and have gotten muscles back but no weight loss, just weight gain. Had the TSH (1.24) and freeT4 (.76), and free T3 (3.9) test just last week. All within normal range. Will see what the doc says next week, I am requesting a visit with a renal dietician- need to go down 3-4 pant sizes to be comfortable again. Others say it's that 40 year old thing, I don't buy that. I am in remission and more active than the previous 2 1/2years of being ill. Hope you are feeling well also and you are not alone, granola

Hi Allerian
When i used to have 3 monthly steroid injections i always use to lose a little weight to start with,
the only explanation that i could come up with ,is that it acts as an anti -inflammatory my so my swelling used to go down.
Just a thought.
