Has anybody had a biopsy on their salivary gland?

Is there anything else that can be diagnose through this procedure besides SS?

I thought that a simple blood test and symptoms of SS would give a concrete dx for SS. But now, I'm going to have a biopsy done soon.
I would like to an idea of your experience...wether it was good, bad, or ugly.

I welcome any advice or extra information. Thank you. :worried:

Hi Marisposa :)

I havent had one so cant comment on that aspect of it. I do know that if it comes back positive, its a cast iron diagnosis, no disputing it.

I think the grey area for diagnosis exists because of the SSA/SSB antibodies. I may be wrong, but I think if you have SSB its pretty obvious you have Sjogren's but a small proportion of SSA's have it too (the remaining SSA's have SCLE).

Good luck with your biopsy and I hope someone who has had it can come along and give you some first hand experience.

Mariposa,

I had the lip biopsy done and it really wasn't that bad. They numb it up first and it only took about 5 minutes it seemed. I had a couple of stitches and that was it. It did confirm my Sjogren's diagnosis...I had a positive ANA and clinical symptoms, but the SSA, SSB antibodies were negative. As far as I know that is the only thing the lip biopsy is used for and if enough other labs and clinical symptoms are positive they usually won't do the biopsy. Hope this helped. Don't worry too much about the biopsy, it wasn't that bad.

I had a lip biopsy about 9 years ago. It was as simple as what Nancy said 5 minutes was all it took. I tried to go back to work but with having to answer the phones my mouth kept bleeding so I went home. If I could have just kept quite I would have had no problems but that is hard for me to do.

Good luck and don't worry.

Lily, thanks for your help. Last summer my blood tests results were:

SSA + High
SSB Negative
Negative ANA.

I supposed this would help clear some confusion since my ANA was +when I first got sick almost two years ago.

KidsPT and Sheila, Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m feeling better about it and I hope my procedure goes like yours; quick and easy.
