i went to rhuemy appt. today and told him bout all the off balance issues as well as the dizzy spells ive been having, he was concerned and felt i had a good case to send me to a neurologist but wants me to talk to my gp about it first, hes concerned because it is happening more frequent & is worse than last year, but he was also honest with me in stating that most times an mri will show nothing, and they cost between 2000-3000 dollars. my ? is, is it really worth it to spend that kind of money (which i dont have) and just live with the balance issues, granted if something was found i would be happy to spend that kind of money, kind of in a pickle and not sure what to do. any advice

Do you have any kind of insurance? If so, what would your out of pocket costs be? I think it's probably worth it if you are having severe balance problems to get an idea (hopefully) of what may be causing them. The real problem comes in terms of if there is any treatment for it that is likely to really help. I would be certain to ask that question to the neurologist - what he/she suspects, possible findings from suggested testing, and possible treatments and likelihood of helping your problem. The neurologist will also do a lot of neuro testing/exam in the office, and that may yield information helpful to dx.
I would wait and see what the neuro suggests, and go from there.
